Initially, it was a joint project between Romania ("Casa de Filme Cinci"), Germany ("DEFA Berlin") and the Soviet Union ("Mosfilm") but it was produced by Romania alone when the German and the Soviet film companies withdrew from the project.
This motion picture was filmed in parallel with its sequel Muschetarul român (1975) and used the same cast and production team.
