- Damon: Well now, Sheriff, it's nice to know that you're out here on patrol.
- Sheriff Calder: No, no, I'm not on patrol. Just lookin' for an ice cream cone, that's all.
- Lem Brewster: The taxes in this town pay your salary to protect the place.
- Sheriff Calder: Well, if anything happens to you, Lem, we'll give you a refund.
- Sheriff Calder: The best thing about turning over a new leaf on Saturday night is that it disappears with a Sunday morning hangover.
- Emily Stewart: Shoot a man for sleeping with someone's wife? That's silly. Half the town'd be wiped out.
- Val Rogers: Bubber, let Jake walk forward. And if he's all right, I'll give you my car and see that you get out of here without anyone bothering you.
- Charlie 'Bubber' Reeves: He can do that?
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: Yeah. He can do that.
- Charlie 'Bubber' Reeves: Huh! What a world.
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: When my father smells oil, nature repents! And there'll be oil; when it flows - and flow it will - my father will be right here with a bonus for everybody! It'll be Saturday night in a few hours, and I've only one more duty - to see our Mexican workers and wish them a safe journey 'home'. You all have a happy weekend and wish me one; we've labored hard and we deserve the happiness that all Americans know to be their birthright!
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: [enters] Hi. Anna? Anna? Anna! *Anna!*
- Anna Reeves: What's the matter? Oh, I fell asleep.
- [throws her arms around his neck, and kisses him]
- Anna Reeves: You're early. Hey, you're shaking.
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: No, look what I have.
- [holds up two bottles of champagne]
- Anna Reeves: [snickers] For a whole year?
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: No, for tonight.
- [sits down on chair]
- Anna Reeves: You've got the jitters.
- [kneels down next to him on floor]
- Anna Reeves: Was it bad at home?
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: No, no worse. Like always.
- [smashes the neck off one of the bottles on the nearest piece of furniture, and as she tries to clean up:]
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: I can't take much more of it. Now, how many times did I say that?
- Anna Reeves: Every Saturday night.
- [smiles]
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: [Anna pours a drink, takes a sip, then hands it to him, he takes a sip, then puts the drink out of the way] You're the only woman I ever knew who never has to talk. First thing I ever noticed about you. Even when you were a little girl.
- [Anna gives a vague smile]
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: I got a present for you.
- [takes a little box out of his pocket, hands it to her, and she sits there looking at it]
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: Well, open it, darling.
- Anna Reeves: [obviously expensive earrings] How much did they cost?
- [raises her eyebrows]
- Anna Reeves: Hmm? $500?
- [Jake smirks, then chuckles]
- Anna Reeves: 800, 900?
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: Why do you have to know? 2000.
- Anna Reeves: Jake, where am I gonna wear 'em? You keep giving me things like that. They're just gonna sit in my lousy room
- [throws them at Jake]
- Anna Reeves: in a rotten drawer and I'll stare at 'em!
- Jason 'Jake' Rogers: [sits down next to her] I didn't marry first, Anna, you did. I didn't marry first, you did!
- [cups her face]
- Anna Reeves: Oh, Jake, I heard you. Come on, stop talking foolish. Stop talking anything.
- [kisses him]
- Sheriff Calder: Anna? Where's Bubber?
- Anna Reeves: Well, Lester just came by to see me, Calder. You see, we've known each other since we were kids, and sometimes when he's broke...
- [to Jake:]
- Anna Reeves: I'm gonna go home and get it.
- Sheriff Calder: [grabs microphone] Slim... Anna Reeves and Jake Rogers are on their way out here. And I want you to get on their tail and stay on it till I tell you to quit.
- [puts down the mic]
- Sheriff Calder: You don't have a chance of meeting Bubber, Anna. Not a chance. Where is he?
- Anna Reeves: I don't talk to sheriffs, Calder. You oughta know that.
- Sheriff Calder: [approaches] Do you know that a fellow was murdered up in Siddonsville today, and Bubber's being accused of it?
- Anna Reeves: Bubba never murdered anybody!
- Sheriff Calder: [nods] I don't believe he would either, but his fingerprints are all over the body. It'd be a whole lot better if he came in here voluntarily.
- Anna Reeves: And be punished for something he didn't do?
- Emily Stewart: Shoot a man for sleeping with someone's wife? That's silly. The whole town would be wiped out!
