Sam wishes for nothing more than an uncomplicated Sunday, but he wakes up with a hangover for a start, and then is blackmailed by Janet into making the tea. He is then questioned by Janet about his attractive secretary, gets interested in a woman's magazine love story, only to find the vital page missing, decides to do some gardening but realises it is lunchtime, thinks he will go for a walk and it begins to rain. "All I need now," he says, "is for her brother to come round on a surprise visit with his stupid wife." Guess who pays a surprise visit?

Pandemonium is let loose when Sam and Janet's 18 year old daughter Patsy comes home for the weekend. Sam seeks refuge at the local where he gets chatting to a young man called Andy who claims he is building up dutch courage to meet the parents of his girlfriend - "a right little raver" - who has a flat in town.

Janet arrives home from the amateur dramatic society in a a state of distress. After a disastrous final rehearsal, one of the leading men has hurt is back and Janet is threatening to back out. Sam comforts her and tries to coax her through learning her lines with the help of an alcoholic beverage or two.
