The original South Korean theatrical print of the film was lost, but the U.S. TV print still exists.
All the landmarks that Yonggary destroys in the film were based on those built by the Japanese during their occupation of Korea. Most noticeable is the destruction of a building that resembles the Government-General Building, which was controversial in South Korea, as it was a reminder of Japanese imperialism (the real building was demolished between 1995 and 1996). Incidentally, Yonggary leaves historical Korean monuments intact.
The Japanese and German import DVDs of this film both have a Super 8 version (with Japanese-language audio) as a special feature.
Curiously, almost all of the vehicles in this film are not Asian made, but rather are American made: Plymouths, Cadillacs, and even a mid-1960's Chevy Corvair convertible.
In the late 1960s, the English dubbed version of the film, titled "Yongary, Monster from the Deep" (1967), was the first, and most widely seen, South Korean film in the United States.
