It was a very fun movie to watch.

The arch is a great monument indeed. Personally, I've been to the top 5 times. This movie shows how the arch is built, and is a very interesting movie to watch. I recommend anyone who is looking for something interesting to watch, should see this. The only part I think should also be in there though, is how the trams were b

    excellent documentary

I saw this movie at the Arch itself as a part of the tour package you get when you visit. St. Louis was a great experience, but the arch is just magnificent. This film takes you through the entire construction of the arch- an arduous three year process in which amazingly, no one lost their lives. It is nothing short of breathtaking how these men achieved the perfection needed for the successful completion of the monument. The movie, made in 1967 had a wonderful, old-school feel to it: Kind of reminded me of the old reel to reel movies you'd watch in History class as a kid, with the bold narration and music. I just loved this film.

My grandfather worked on the elevators

I remember watching Arch go up as my grandfather worked on the elevators,I have seen this movie many times (my grandfather is in the movie)and it really captures the feel of the times. The tension felt in St. Louis at the time; the worry that the legs of the Arch wouldn't meet at the top, that the legs wouldn't stretch far enough apart to put the keystone section in, that St. Louis would be a laughingstock. This movie really captures the spirit of the period of construction, the wonder of the engineering, and the pride of the men who worked on the Arch. The story covers the entire period of the building of the Arch, from concept to reality.

Very good documentary about the Arch

I first saw this film at the arch itself. Liked it so much I bought the VHS (this was a few years ago, I'll bet they have DVD's now). Well made, insightful and well-narrated, it shows the arch going up and all the problems attendant to it. There are lots of shots of hard-hatted workmen and their construction equipment, along with incisive commentary by an old-school announcer. There's a bit of real cinematography here too... the sun rising and setting on any given work day. No wonder this was nominated for an Oscar (but didn't win the award that year). I liked the pace, the style and the overall quality of this "better-than-average" doc on civil engineering. If you have the chance to see it in St Louis or via DVD, check this one out. Nice and very watchable, in a classic and old-fashioned way.
