What can one say about a comedy that just limps along, even when an attractive cast does fine work every step of the way? Even the bit parts are creatively cast in this odd romp infected with a really bad case of The Cutes. Natalie Wood is at her best, but in service of dumb gags: let’s blow bubble gum bubbles! The result so upset Natalie that she ditched her studio contract. The roster of engaging talent includes Peter Falk (in suave leading man mode!), Dick Shawn (less grating than usual), Lila Kedrova & Lou Jacobi (showing real style), Jonathan Winters (wasted) and, of all people, Ian Bannen as Natalie Wood’s uncomprehending husband. Bannen is so good, he drags a real laugh or two from the material. The show has been beautifully remastered.

Each year, the Library of Congress selects 25 films to be named to the National Film Registry, a proclamation of commitment to preserving the chosen pictures for all time. They can be big studio pictures or experimental short films, goofball comedies or poetic meditations on life. The National Film Registery "showcases the extraordinary diversity of America’s film heritage and the disparate strands making it so vibrant" and by preserving the films, the Library of Congress hopes to "a crucial element of American creativity, culture and history.” This year’s selections span the period 1913 to 2004 and include a number of films you’re familiar with. Unless you’ve never heard of "Saving Private Ryan," "The Big Lebowski," “Rosemary’s Baby” or "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Spanning the years 1913-2004, the 25 films to be added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for 2014 include Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, Arthur Penn’s Little Big Man, John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the Coen brothers’ The Big Lebowski. The annual selection helps to ensure that the movies will be preserved for all time. This year’s list brings the number of films in the registry to 650.

Also on the list are John Lasseter’s 1986 animated film, Luxo Jr; the original Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder; and Howard Hawks’ classic 1959 Western Rio Bravo. Documentaries and silent films also make up part of the selection which represents titles that are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant; they must also each be at least 10 years old. Today, we're featuring Bert Convy circa 1981. Convy first appeared on Broadway in Billy Barnes Revue in 1959, followed by Vintage '60, Nowhere to Go But Up, The Beast in Me, Love and Kisses, Fiddler on the Roof, The Impossible Years, Cabaret, The Front Page and Nine. His off-Broadway credits include The Fantasticks, Morning Sun and Shoot Anything With Hair That Moves. He was also the conceiver and director for off-Broadway's Do It Again in 1971.

Ned Wertimer, best known for his role as Ralph the Doorman on the long-running CBS comedy The Jeffersons has died. The 89-year-old actor died at a Los Angeles-area nursing home on January 2, following a November fall at his Burbank home, his manager Brad Lemack tells The Associated Press. The Buffalo, New York native appeared in dozens of TV shows from the 1960s through the 1980s, including Gunsmoke, I Dream Of Jeannie, Mork & Mindy, Mayberry R.F.D., and Mary Tyler Moore, but it was his role as Ralph Hart, the uniformed, mustachioed doorman at the luxury apartment building on The Jeffersons that he is best remembered. He appeared in all 11 seasons of the All In The Family spinoff that aired from 1975 to 1985. He also appeared in numerous feature films including Hometown U.S.A., Mame, The Pack, At Long Last Love and The Impossible Years. His most recent film appearance was in 2007′s Pirates...

Novelist, screenwriter and biographer whose subjects included his father, Groucho

Arthur Marx, who has died aged 89, grew up in the shadow of his father, Groucho, and was steeped in the controlled chaos of the Marx Brothers. Torn between trying to distance himself from a demanding father, yet also prove worthy of his genius, he enjoyed a long career as a writer of screen and stage comedies, novels and biographies. Not surprisingly, however, his most successful work capitalised on the public's interest in his father and his uncles, Chico, Harpo, Gummo and Zeppo.

Marx wrote several works about Groucho, the first of which, Life With Groucho (1954), published at the height of his father's television popularity, was a warts-and-all portrait punctuated by Groucho's own annotations. (Marx wrote that he would like to correct the impression that his father was a miser; Groucho's footnote read: "You'd better or I'll cut you off without a nickle.
