Stephen King’s Pet Sematary has been chosen for another new adaptation as the author’s popularity in the eyes of moviegoers continues to skyrocket. This time, the story will be brought to life by Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, the minds behind Starry Eyes, and according to Deadline, Paramount has the film locked in for an April 19, 2019 release.
For those unfamiliar with Pet Sematary, the story follows the Creed family as they move to a small town in the Northeast which borders a cemetery enabling the buried to return. Head of the family, Louis Creed thinks it’s far better to bring his loved ones back from the dead as murderous simulacra than let them rest in peace – but don’t worry, there’s plenty of interfering supporting characters to impart wisdom.

Stephen King’s Pet Sematary was already adapted in 1989 by Mary Lambert to moderate critical and financial success, but that’s not to say it can’t use a fresh coat of paint, right? In fact, that’s what the folks at Paramount Pictures are thinking, as they’re pushing ahead with a remake of it and tonight, they’ve found two directors to steer the ship.
Taking the helm here will be Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch, the duo who directed 2014 thriller Starry Eyes. No actors have been cast just yet, and further details on the project are understandably scarce, but the gears are now in motion and we expect things to come together quickly.

It hasn’t arrived in theatres just yet, but already, the film is generating an enourmous amount of pre-release buzz, all of which is very positive. Each trailer has been better than the last and some are already hailing it as one of the most terrifying movies ever made. A bold claim, to be sure, but if director Andy Muschietti can deliver and give us a horrifying and well executed adaptation of Stephen King’s classic story, then you can bet that it won’t be the last time he works with the iconic author.
Indeed, it seems that the director already has his eye on updating another one of King’s novels: Pet Sematary. Of course, the tale was already adapted in 1989 by Mary Lambert to moderate critical and financial success, but that’s not to say it can’t use a fresh coat of paint, right?

Oh those clever folks at Paramount think of everything! In a spot of deft timing with this nation’s favourite holiday celebrating the dead, Halloween, the studio have announced that they’re dragging classic resurrection flick, Pet Sematary, from the dusty closet of 80s horror and back to our cinema screens with a newly-announced director, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
The original Pet Sematary, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, was adapted in 1989 by director Mary Lambert to moderate critical and financial success. The story follows the Creed family as they move to a small town in the Northeast which borders a cemetery enabling the buried to return. Head of the family, Louis Creed thinks it’s far better to bring his loved ones back from the dead as murderous simulacra than let them rest in peace. Fill the Void begins with the greatest Purim sequence in the history of cinema. To be sure, there isn’t much competition. For Your Consideration and its movie-within-a-movie Home for Purim had that title up until now, and it’s perhaps the only other film ever to feature the holiday. However, I doubt Rama Burshtein had Christopher Guest in mind when she filmed the beginning of her first fiction feature. Francis Ford Coppola, on the other hand, hangs over every moment. Burshtein plays Purim like the opening wedding in The Godfather, taking the time to carefully introduce the Hasidic community of Tel Aviv and its traditions. The head of the family sits at the table, taking requests from the younger men and handing out gobs of cash as holiday gifts. Like Coppola’s masterpiece, this tells us more about the insulation of this world than any confrontation with outsiders might. The...

The Kick
Written by Jong-suk Lee, based on a story by Prachya Pinkaew
Directed by Prachya Pinkaew
Thailand/South Korea 2011 Fantasia imdb
Traditionally, films that pit one country’s martial arts against the martial arts from other countries are blood-soaked chauvinistic affairs like One Armed Boxer and its sequel Master of the Flying Guillotine. Both great films, they up the ante on the Kung Fu bragging rights by having the hero Tien Lung (Jimmy Wang Yu) beat the champions of Japan, Korea, Thailand, India and Tibet with literally one arm tied behind his back – or chopped off, depending on how you look at it.
The Kick is a much more gentle film, turning the battle between Korea’s Tae Kwan Do and Thailand’s Muay Thai into a family comedy and adding Thai star Jeeja Yanin to the winning Korean side to salve any hurt Thai feelings. (Almost deliberately, halfway...
