Cast members Susan George and Bo Hopkins replaced original cast members Susan Blakely and John Beck in the roles of Mary Lee Carter and Sheriff Duke respectively. The casting of the originals had been announced in the 8th December 1975 edition of show-business trade-paper 'The Hollywood Reporter'. Reportedly, they did not stay with the project and bowed out of the production for reasons which are publicly undetermined.
A sex scene between Timothy Bottoms (Poke) and Randee Lynn Jensen (Vera) was cut from the film to avoid an R rating.
The movie had three titles during the course of pre-production, principal photography and the wrap of filming. The announcement of the pending production of this picture under the title of ''Dirty Town'' was announced in the 8th December 1975 edition of show-business trade paper 'The Hollywood Reporter'. The movie commenced principal photography on 29th December 1975 under the title of ''The Town'' according to an article in the 12th January 1976 issue of show-business trade-publication 'Box'. The final title of ''A Small Town in Texas'' was announced in the 13th January 1976 edition of show-business trade-paper 'Daily Variety'. The one common element of the wording of all three of these titles was the word ''town''.
The color, make and model of the jalopy that was being fixed and restored in the garage was a red 1939 Chevrolet Convertible.
The film director of A Small Town in Texas (1976), Jack Starrett, was actually born in a small town in Texas. This place was the township of Refugio in this American state's Refugio County.

Jack Starrett: The movie's director as Buford Tyler who is seen at the start of the movie. He is billed for this part in the film under his regular pseudonym of Claude Ennis Starrett. Jr. which he had previously used in other productions.
