Wonderful Memories
Everything about the show was wonderful. Each episode featured beautiful scenery and provided a wholesome hour of television. Dan Haggerty was well cast in the title role and is convincing in his portrayal of Adams as a gentle, caring soul. Equally good is character actor Denver Pyle as the ornery but kind-hearted mountain man Mad Jack. Don Shanks rounded out the cast as Nacoma, a young Native American whom Adams befriended and who knows the territory. The theme song "Maybe", beautifully written and performed, brings a sense of longing and a tear to the eye.
I am blessed to have grown up at a time with quality television. This show is currently broadcast on MeTV on Sunday mornings in the NJ/NY area. Give it a look!
Ahhhh....great memories!
Somewhere in all of us, lies that Walden-esque desire to abandon the trappings of modern life and live in the wilderness among nature. While this was merely a television program, and undoubtedly fraught with errors and impossibilities (i.e. raising an orphan cub to be your "buddy"), it allowed for soles young and old to live out that Western fantasy, albeit vicarisely. I miss those days curled up with a pillow on my Grandma's floor and imersing myself in Grizzly Adam's world.
A Trip back in time
a forgotten classic, please remember it!!!!
A Wonderful Subject of Being One with Nature
Did you know
- TriviaBen, who was actually played by a female grizzly named "Bozo", died in 1999. She is very much missed by her owners who considered her part of their family. Bozo left behind a female cub, who is said to be a lot like her mother.

Mad Jack: [title sequence narration] They call me Mad Jack, and if there is anybody in these mountains that knows the real story about James Adams, that'd be me. So I'm putting it down in writing just how it happened in hopes of setting the record straight. Well, my friend Adams was accused of a crime he didn't commit, so he escaped into the mountains, leaving behind the only life that he ever knew. Now that wilderness out there ain't no place for a greenhorn and his chances of survivin' were mighty slim. Weren't no time at all before he was beaten down, ragged and nearly starved. Long about then, he came upon a grizzly bear cub, all alone and helpless. Now Adams knew that little critter couldn't survive without his help; so he started right down that cliff, risking his own life to save it.
[chuckles]
Mad Jack: Now that cub took to Adams right off. And that was when he discovered that he had special kind of way with animals; They'd just come right up to him like he was a natural part of the wilderness. But that bear cub, he was extra special. As he growed, he became the best friend Adams ever had, and together, they became a legend.
