The book Carlos is reading on the deck of the boat is "Political Power and Social Classes" by Nicos Poulantzas (1936-1979), a Greek Marxist sociologist exiled in France. Poulantzas committed suicide in Paris in 1979, a year after the release of this film, by throwing himself from the top of a skyscraper.
