The major sponsor of the film was the Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido. Catriona MacColl (Oscar) promoted a red lipstick for the spring cosmetic line that year.
Japanese translator Frederik L. Schodt translated the entire "Rose of Versailles" manga into English as a reference for the filmmakers, but gave the only copy of the translation to them and it was subsequently lost.
Nippon Television (NTV), one of the film's production companies, would air an anime adaptation of the manga following the film's release, produced by TMS Entertainment. Between that time, NTV would air an episode of Lupin the Third: Part II (1977) (another TMS series) that serves as a crossover with "Rose of Versailles", Berusaiyu wa ai ni moeta (1979). Nearly four decades later, Mataichirô Yamamoto, the producer of this film, would produce the live-action Lupin the 3rd (2014).
