Several scenes were shot at the real Chica da Silva manor at Diamantina, Minas Gerais.
A restored print is now considered lost in the fire at the Brazilian Cinemateca in July 2021. Zezé Motta said of the fire, "We lost six decades of history, all memory of political aid to cinema. [...] That was part of Brazilian history brought down to ashes". The movie is, however, available on Youtube, as well as included in the Cannes Classics list.
