Du and Du - same/same, but different

Well well - no pun intended with my you/you (in German) in the summary headline. This was the last of the Dude movies, that got their inspiration from the Herbie franchise (in other words remaked or "stole" the concept, whatever you prefer) ... that said, I think they made their own mark in movie history. I do wonder if other countries had their own Herbies ... very likely.

That all aside, this one confirms what I suspected (or you can say knew) from the first movie. While it is said that the movie was shot in German (language wise), it is a bit like many movie from that era (70s that is) ... they probably shot in different languages - so all the actors spoke in their native tongue and it was dubbed in the regions it was released.

Very easy to spot with the dubbing voice of Bud Spencer - used for someone else than the original ... when you order Bud Spencer but get the "cheap" copy ... no offense to the guy they hired (lookalike).

This also is the first (and last) to not use the actual car - there surely is a story behind this, but I couldn't bother to look for that ... so you get a literal (mechanical) bug instead ... well one of the "two" that have been used after the events of the last movie I reckon ... anyway ... this feels cheaper again, yet way better than the very first one they did almost a decade before this one ... seen worse and some kids and those who watched it when they were little will have or make fond memories ... quality (or lack thereof) be damned ...

Dudu V: Unceremoniously replaced by a robot

The last of five movies director Rudolf Zehetgruber made about a yellow Volkswagen beetle with many gadgets. However, the famous Dudu is trashed after only a few minutes at the beginning of this movie. It's a shame! A kind of spider robot with an annoying beepy voice becomes the new companion of El Guancho (played by Zehetgruber himself), obviously in the wake of the 'Star Wars' mania of the late seventies. Guancho and his robot are fighting various gangsters including Hidalgo (Brad Harris) and Alfonso (veteran western actor Fernando Sancho).

Even if the last sequel is a total disappointment, they managed again to find great locations: shot on the Canary Islands (mostly Lanzarote, partly Gran Canaria, I would guess from my own visits there). Anyhow, it would have been nice to get an actual story beyond a couple of standard chases around a (yawn) gold treasure. In opposite to the previous movies, they didn't even manage to install interesting female characters. I voted 4-7-6-5-3 for the five movies.

    Funny movie with robot crab

I remember watching this as a kid on some Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, most likely on a local network. I saw it dubbed in English, the dubbing was funny, almost like a kung-fu movie.

The best parts of the movie included any time the robot crab would complain to the star of the movie, "El Guancho" as played by Rud Rittberg, in a tinny, metallic robotic voice more suited to a 1950's sci-fi movie.

I wish I could remember more of what the story was about, but I do remember it was cheesy action/drama/comedy.

I would love to see it again just to relive an old memory.

West German Fun Movie with Brad HARRIS

When the films in the Dudu series were shown on the holiday program of the West German television station ZDF in the early 1980s, it was always a big deal.

This totally unsuccessful fifth and final part gives Dudu the well-deserved coup de grace of scrapping after just a quarter of an hour. After that, things continue uninspired on Lanzarote.

Director Rudolf Zehetgruber was once again able to attract the first guard of Italian-European trash films to the Canary Islands with Sal Borgese, Herbert Fux and Fernando Sancho. But even the appearance of action legend Brad Harris as the main villain Don Fernando can't save this trash film.

Some childhood memories are better left alone.
