Image
Joe Don Baker, the actor who as the real-life Sheriff Buford Pusser in the 1973 vigilante film Walking Tall carried a big stick to mete out his own Tennessee brand of justice, died May 7, his family has announced. He was 89.

A cause of death was not disclosed.

Born February 12, 1936, in Groesbeck, Texas, Baker played football for North Texas State College and, upon graduating in 1959, served a two-year stint in the Army before moving to New York City to study acting at the Actor’s Studio. He would remain a lifelong member of the famed organization.

After some time performing on the New York stage – he appeared on Broadway in 1963’s Marathon ’33 and, a year later, in Blues for Mister Charlie. Joe Don Baker at an event for The Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
Joe Don Baker, the broad-shouldered Texas tough guy who portrayed characters on both sides of the law, most notably Sheriff Buford Pusser in the unexpected box-office hit Walking Tall, died May 7, his family announced. He was 89.

Baker first attracted mainstream attention in 1972 when he starred as the younger, business-minded brother of an aging Arizona rodeo rider (Steve McQueen) in Sam Peckinpah’s Junior Bonner (1972), then portrayed a sadistic mob hitman named Molly in Don Siegel’s Charley Varrick (1973), starring Walter Matthau.

In James Bond films, the 6-foot-3 Baker played a villain, the megalomaniacal arms dealer Brad Whitaker, in The Living Daylights (1987), starring Timothy Dalton as 007, then returned as a good guy, CIA agent Jack Wade, opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1995 and ’97 movies GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies, respectively.

As former professional wrestler Pusser — based on a real-life sheriff who cleaned up crime in his Tennessee town — Baker survives a series...

5 Things to Know: The Case of Slain New York Jogger Karina Vetrano After Her Alleged Killer’s Arrest
Laurence Fox and Kevin Whately in Inspector Lewis (2006)
For months, it seemed as though Karina Vetrano’s killing might never be solved.

Detectives investigating her homicide last August chased down hundreds of leads but got nowhere fast. That all changed Saturday when police arrested 20-year-old Chanel Lewis, a Brooklyn man, on murder charges.

The day she was killed, about two hours after she went out for a jog, the 30-year-old was found beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled to death in a park near her neighborhood of Howard Beach, Queens.

Since Lewis was charged with the killing, his family members have insisted he’s not capable of such malice.

How Slain Jogger’s Fight Against Her Killer Helped Police Identify a Suspect 6 Months Later
As the life was being choked from her body six months ago, Karina Vetrano fought fiercely against her killer — clawing at his skin with her nails and biting him with such force that her teeth cracked, authorities say.

Detectives are glad she did.

This weekend, New York City police detained 20-year-old Chanel Lewis and charged him with murder and sexual assault in connection with Vetrano’s brutal killing on Aug. 2, 2016, in a Queens park. But police say the arrest may never have happened if not for Vetrano’s actions in her final moments.

Several tiny shreds of the killer’s...

NBC Rolls With "Ironside"
NBC has ordered a TV pilot based on the 1967 Universal Television police drama series "Ironside", reportedly with some new, high-tech improvements.

The original TV series starred actor Raymond Burr as San Francisco Police Department (Sfpd) Chief of Detectives 'Robert T. Ironside', a veteran of more than twenty years of police service. who is forced to retire from the department after a sniper's bullet confines him to a wheelchair.

Michael Caleo ("Sopranos") wrote the script for the reboot, that could possibly see Ironside rigged with a high-tech arsenal of concealed weaponry built into his chair (?!) Executive producers are David Semel and Teri Weinberg.

Hopefully producers will cast an actor that looks like Raymond Burr, with the same strategy director Jj Abrams used when casting the new 'Kirk' and 'Spock' for his "Star Trek" reboot, choosing younger-looking versions of original "Star Trek" actors William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

DVD Review - 'In The Heat Of The Night: The First Season' (1988)
"I want to like you people.  And I want you people to like me.  But there can't be liking without respect.  And until there is that respect, you will call me Mr. Tibbs." Those are the words spoken by Howard E. Rollins, Jr. as Chief of Detectives Virgil Tibbs in NBC's In The Heat Of The Night, after being called "boy" by a subordinate in his new job with the Sparta, Mississippi police department.  And if that doesn't set the tone for this classic television drama, released on DVD for the first time this past August, I don't know what does. Fans of this popular crime drama have been calling-- begging, even-- for its DVD release...

Natalie Wood's Death Certificate Amended To Reflect 'Undetermined Factors'
Natalie Wood
Los Angeles -- Natalie Wood's death certificate has been changed to reflect some of the uncertainties and lingering questions surrounding the actress' drowning more than 30 years ago in the Pacific Ocean off Southern California.

The document was amended earlier this month and shifts Wood's death from an accidental drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors," according to a copy of the certificate obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press.

The amended document also now states that the circumstances of how Wood ended up in the waters off Catalina Island in November 1981 are "not clearly established."

The changes occurred nine months after sheriff's homicide investigators renewed their inquiry into Wood's death shortly before its 30th anniversary.

Chief of Detectives William McSweeney said the decision to amend the death certificate was ultimately made by the coroner's office, which has been instructed by detectives not to discuss the case. "I would just say undetermined is descriptive,...

Natalie Wood death investigation 'finds no evidence of foul play'
Natalie Wood
The investigation into the death of actress Natalie Wood has revealed that foul play was unlikely, according to a report. In November last year the Lapd reopened the case of the actress, who died in 1981 in mysterious circumstances, but it has now been reported that no new evidence has been uncovered to suggest that her passing was anything but accidental. Chief of detectives William McSweeney told the Los Angeles Times that weeks of interviews and investigations have not uncovered any new information, saying: "At this point, it is an accidental death. Nothing has been discovered to suggest changing that at this time." However, he did say that the case is not yet closed as detectives are still trying to find answers to questions that were left unanswered at the time of the initial investigation in 1981. McSweeney described the matter as a "cold case" that (more)...

Detectives on Natalie Wood Case: "At This Point, It Is an Accidental Death"
Natalie Wood
It would be very satisfying to pin down an exact cause to Natalie Wood's death (and possibly who else was involved), but it doesn't seem like we'll be getting that luxury. Not yet, anyway. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department confirmed to E! News that there has not been any evidence of foul play in the iconic Hollywood star's case and it is still being ruled as an accidental drowning. However, they also stress that the case "is still being investigated and is still active." After the Los Angeles Sheriff's Homicide Bureau decided to reexamine the case of Wood's death 30 years later, Chief of Detectives William McSweeney told the Los Angeles Times, "At this point, it is an...

Hawaii Five-0 Review: Out of The Pan, Into the Fryer
"Alaheo Pau'ole:" Gone Forever.

Was this entire Hawaii Five-0 episode pieced together from spare parts of better episodes? There were so many disjointed pieces that I nearly got lost along the way. Given the non-sequitur nature of the hour, I’m just going to break down the main points.

Lori and Danny Handcuffed: Does anyone have any idea what point there was to this storyline? Furthermore, why did Steve feel the need to drop they key off the balcony? It all felt totally out of place.

We have not seen any indication that Lori and Danny would be romantically linked. What the heck is the “Jersey Slip” and why do you need to be handcuffed to another person for it to work? Finally, what type of horrible police officer is Danny that his handcuff key is not on a key ring of any sort... and he only has one in his possession?...

Alan Fudge
Actor Fudge Dies
Alan Fudge
Actor Alan Fudge has died at the age of 77.

The prolific TV star passed away on 10 October in Los Angeles after a battle with lung and liver cancer, according to Variety.com.

Canadian screenwriter Graham Yost paid tribute to Fudge, telling the website, "Alan was one of the most generous, kind and caring men I have ever known. Many of the roles he played over the years reflected that side of him. And then there were the roles where he got to go really dark and twisted - those were the roles that made all of us who knew him smile and applaud. He was a great actor and a great man."

Fudge racked up a large number of TV credits in his long-running career, with roles in Man from Atlantis, Eischied, Paper Dolls, and Bodies of Evidence, along with parts in Kojak, Charlie's Angels, Magnum, P.I., Cagney & Lacey, The A-Team, Beverly Hills, 90210, Baywatch, and Dawson's Creek. He also enjoyed a recurring role in family drama series 7th Heaven over eight years.

Fudge's movie roles included parts in Capricorn One and Edward Scissorhands.

He was last seen onscreen in 2009 with guest appearances in Big Love, The Closer and The Office.

CSI: NY</i> | Photo Credits: Eric Liebowitz/CBS" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />

Appearances are often deceiving on television.

Emmy winner John Larroquette, who wraps his three-episode CSI:ny arc Friday, says the same is definitely true for his character. Larroquette plays Manhattan Chief of Detectives Ted Carver, who first butted heads with Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) over how to handle the media during a sniper case.

Are you watching CSI: NY tonight? Tell us here!

Last week, Mac's team found the body of Carver's sister buried in Central Park, and Mac began to suspect that Carver is somehow connected to the 15-year-old case. Larroquette admits that his character is not blameless, but advises that viewers wait to make up their minds.

"As much as it points toward him being [the villain], that opinion may be altered by the end of the episode," Larroquette says...
