He was suicidal over his writer's block, which also had a lot to do with his excessive drinking and the poor state of his marriage to Eileen.
It's never actually explained but the treatment was something liken to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and his doctor, a psychological grip through medication. When at the center, Roger complains to the doctor about what all the medication is doing to him.
