A Name for Evil (1973)

FAQ

A Name for Evil

FAQ

This film is part of my personal collection, but I recorded it many years ago onto VHS from TV. I am trying to update my collection with better quality recordings. However, when I bought the DVD of this film, I was familiar enough with it to notice right away that large sections of it are missing compared to the version I recorded from TV. In case it was just the DVD, I also bought the prerecorded VHS but it was the same as the DVD. Just to give examples of how bad the cuts are: Scene: Culp quits job. The next 90 seconds are missing. Culp returns home. In this scene 70 seconds are missing. Eggar appears. In this scene 60 seconds are missing. Culp arrives at old family house. 50 seconds are missing from his walk around the property. He goes inside the house. 80 seconds are missing from this scene. There are also small cuts like when he stops by a hotel and talks to the proprietor. Of the first 15 minutes of the film, there seems to be 5 minutes missing. If the rest of the film is like this, then it may be cut by one third. I know films are edited, but usually the film and the various consumer versions are the same. Does anyone know why the DVD and VHS are so incomplete and is there a DVD or VHS that is complete? I am adding an additional comment here: I don't think the edited version of this film can make any sense which may explain why many of the reviewers here didn't like it. Crucial scenes are missing entirely and dialogue cut. What puzzles me most about this editing is it seems like it was intentional to make the film look bad. It certainly wasn't because of length because the film is shorter than average. Thanks.
