Created by Producer Verity Lambert, Script Editor Midge Mackenzie and Actress Georgia Brown. It came after Brown had complained to the BBC about the lack of meaningful roles for women, and they told her to find a series she would like to be in.
Originally it was planned to have all-women writers to script the series. Ultimately, none could be found that could deal with the subject on a historical level. Four male writers were hired.
Many people missed the last 20 minutes as they were watching the European Cup Final match.
