According to executive producer Lou Scheimer, the series was created because Filmation wanted a female counterpart to Captain Marvel. They wanted to own the character outright, rather than paying National Periodicals to license Mary Marvel.
Isis originally appeared in the Wonder Woman DC comics. In the Justice League DC comics, Wonder Woman and Isis were trapped in the underworld, Isis became Wonder Woman's ally, and they both defeated the god Hades to escape.
This is the first regular live-action television series with a super powered heroine as a lead or title character.
In interviews, JoAnna Cameron has said that she hated working with the black raven, and asked the producers several times if they could write him out of the script.
