Prakash Mehra was keen to cast Feroz Khan and Amitabh Bachchan together. He offered the film to Feroz, but Feroz did not want to work Sunday shifts.That was a rule he always followed. Thats when Prakash sought out Vinod Khanna. When Feroz refused, Amitabh stepped into Feroz Khan's role and Vinod Khanna was signed for the role Amitabh was earlier signed for.

Director Prakash Mehra first asked Vinod Khanna to play the role of Ajay. Khanna said he would act in the film only if he was paid Rs 1 lakh more than Amitabh Bachchan was paid. Mehra agreed. Thus Amitabh got Rs 1.5 lakh and Vinod Khanna was paid Rs 2.5 lakh.

Noor Jehan's song "Dama Dam Mast Qalander" is playing in the first scene of the film. During the restaurant fight scene. I.S. Johar had his own version"Dama Dam Mast Qalandar" by Amit Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, in the movie Nasbandi. Mast Qalandar" had a old Punjabi version remixed in the album Extra Hot 7 Bhangra Remixes. Remixed by Amit and San J of The X Zecutive. This was in 1992. It also had another version in the album "House Of Shah: Mick St. Claire Remix Volume 8".This was in 1991. Ricky Kej did a cover version of the song "Mast Kalander" in his album Punjabi in the Club. "Mast Kalandar" in the movie David (2013) by Rekha Bhardwaj. Gurdas Mann and Runa Laila also did their own version of "Damadam Mast Qalandar". O Ma Meri Pat Rakheeho (Maa Tu Durga Tu Vaishnav Mata from Jai Jwala (1972) The tune of this bhajan was based on the popular qawwali "Dumadam Mast Qalandar".
