The Story of O (1975)

Quotes

The Story of O

Edit
  • Narrator: O felt defiled and guilty at having found pleasure in the arms of a stranger. But later, her lover explained that he felt the more he gave her to others, the dearer she was to him. The fact that he could, was the proof that she belonged to him.
  • Rene: One can give only what really belongs to you.
  • O: Hmm?
  • Rene: No, don't speak. You heard yesterday that as long as you are here, you are not to look a man in the face. Nor speak to him. From now on, you'll observe that rule with me as well. You are mine, but before you enter the world of silence, it is important to me you say two words, no more. It's the name of the person for whom I brought you here... and that you'll meet soon, I swear.
  • [whispers into her ear:]
  • Rene: Sir Stefan.
  • O: [repeats reverently] Sir Stefan.
  • Narrator: O was very surprised by having her hands tied, since she had every intention of obeying her lover.
  • Rene: I'm leaving, and I won't be coming back here till I come to get you.
  • O: How soon?
  • Rene: Not too long.
  • O: How many days?
  • Rene: Now, if you want.
  • O: Stay with me...
  • Rene: I wanted to, but I'm worried I can't imagine seeing it all again.
  • O: You don't like that?
  • Rene: I will. Is it difficult to understand me?
  • O: I wasn't supposed to speak to you...
  • [shakes her head]
  • O: or look at you either.
  • Rene: [cups her chin] Look at me. I told you it was difficult understanding me. But you seem to, right?
  • O: Yes.
  • Rene: In what way?
  • O: A little girl was walking in the field. Then she passed a huge white rabbit carrying a watch. Her name was Alice. The rabbit surprised a lot of people, but not Alice.
  • Rene: And so?
  • O: She falls in a deep well. She's not hurt by the fall. And she has many adventures.
  • Rene: Continue. Who else does she meet?
  • O: Sir Stefan.
  • Narrator: They examined her body in a brutal and abominable way. She was covered in shame. But despite the shame, she felt like someone going into a familiar dream that's about to start.
  • O: You say you love me. But if l asked you to take one of the ordeals l went through, would you accept?
  • [She puts his cigarette out on his hand]
  • Anne-Marie: You mustn't keep your knees together. It is forbidden.
  • Eric, master II: Not whipping her a little and giving her pleasure. The point is to draw tears from her.
  • Narrator: In fact, she liked all that came from her lover, even Pierre. She belonged to her lover through all the strangers she gave herself to.
  • Rene: No, you belong to us both. Say this: l belong to you both, and I'll do what you desire.
  • Rene: Now listen to me. You must get out of the car, and ring the doorbell.
  • [O nods]
  • Rene: You'll follow whoever answers, and you'll have to do whatever they say.
  • [O nods]
  • Rene: Do you hear me?
  • O: Oh, yes.
  • [climbs out, then looks back]
  • O: I'll try.
  • Pierre: [speaking down to his supine guest] Here, when we whip you, you will always be blindfolded. Only this evening, you're permitted to see yourself whipped.
  • [O looks at him with disdain]
  • Pierre: Ohh... So she's proud as well.
  • [leans forward on his chair]
  • Pierre: I want to hear her scream. Right now!
  • Pierre: [to O] Look at me. Look at me just once, and I won't beat you again. I'll only pretend to.
  • Narrator: O wondered why charm and terror were so mixed, why terror was so sweet.
  • Sir Stephen: I've seen no one, not even René, take you. It doesn't mean that you'll never give yourself to a stranger in front of him who loves you.
