Mélanie Laurent directs and leads this frothy and undemanding Charlie’s Angels-esque caper that has fun moments but fizzles into nothing
There are almost enough moments of low-level fun to be had in Wingwomen, Mélanie Laurent’s easy, breezy attempt to make a French action comedy polished enough to compete with Hollywood counterparts. The sub-genre has become exhausting of late, the sight of a couple quipping while involved in a pop-soundtracked action setpiece starting to border on parody, especially in this year’s atrocious Chris Evans-Ana de Armas disaster Ghosted. But Laurent, to her credit as director, is less interested in how a shootout can work as an aphrodisiac, and more invested in how it would affect a female friendship.
And so the first time we see her and Bff, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, fresh from Passages, they’re bantering about the latter’s lacklustre love life while...

Diaz was initially explaining how she ended up at one of the Grammy-winning singer’s Eras Tour shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in August.
“Zoe Saldaña is, like, one of my besties, and she was like, we were talking the night before, and she was like, ‘Should we go see Taylor Swift?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I think we should, but how are we ever going to get tickets?'” the Charlie’s Angels actress explained. “Then, Elsa Collins calls Zoe the next morning and says, ‘Let’s go.'”

Before Cameron Diaz was “Back in Action,” the actress got her start transporting drugs across international borders. And no, this is not the plot of her next action film.
Diaz revealed during the “Second Life” podcast (via Yahoo! Entertainment) that she “didn’t work a day” as a model in Paris but, rather, found an alternative profession.
“I was there a full year, and I didn’t work one day. I couldn’t book a job to save my life,” Diaz explained. “I got like one job, but really I think I was like a mule carrying drugs to Morocco — I swear to God.”
The “Knight and Day” and “Charlie’s Angels” action star continued, “It was before Tsa or anything like that. It was like early ’90s. They gave me a suitcase that was locked that had my ‘costumes’ in it — quote, unquote.”

On June 25, 2009, Farrah Fawcett died. The star of Charlie's Angels and one of the most iconic posters of all time was 62. The previous month the docu-special Farrah's Story had given an up-close look at her life, courtesy of home movies shot by her dear friend Alana Stewart, as Fawcett was treated for anal cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in 2006. Her story was full of highs and lows, triumphs and tragedies, and her family, friends and the Hollywood community in general were devastated to lose her. And then, a few hours later, also on June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died. Suddenly, there was only one story unfolding in Southern California,...

The Grace Year is set to be published by Wednesday books in the fall.
Elizabeth Banks is adding another credit to her directing filmography. According to Deadline, the actress, producer, and director has signed on to helm The Grace Year, an adaptation of the Kim Liggett novel set to be published next fall, for Universal.
The Grace Year, which is being published by Wednesday Books, is being touted by Macmillan "a speculative thriller in the vein of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power."
It tells the story of 16-year-old Tierney James who is preparing for her "grace year," the time when women are sent out of the village and into the woods to release their aphrodisiacal magic into the wild. The book "examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between."

While chatting with Entertainment Tonight, Kristen Stewart discussed how the upcoming film will be different from past iterations as she addressed fellow Angel Lucy Liu's comments that the reboot is a "positive result for women."
Earlier this week, Liu, who previously appeared in the hit 2000 film and its 2003 sequel, gave the reboot her seal of approval, telling Et, "It's like Sherlock Holmes. The material in itself is a very different type of literature - and it's not necessarily literature. But it is something that people keep coming back to and they're drawn to. That's something that needs to be explored and if it needs to be explored on all different levels, then it should be."

last month we learned that Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott (Aladdin, Power Rangers) and Ella Balinska (Midsomer Murders) will star in director Elizabeth Banks's upcoming reboot of Charlie's Angels.
This new film seems like it will be taking a different approach than the previous renditions, and while talking to Et about the film, she explained that it's going to be "grounded and well-intentioned".
Stewart has already started training for the film and when addressing Lucy Liu’s recent remarks that the new film would be a "positive result for women", Stewart said:
"Oh, that is really cool that she said that. It is true I think, it is not maybe everyone’s immediate response that it would be, like, something we would have to see again because the one I grew up with was so much fun, and you know, the re-imagining is so grounded and well intentioned and really...

Kristen Stewart Says New ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Will Be “Grounded” And Not An “Impression” Of The Others
It’s pretty clear from the cast brought together for Elizabeth Banks’ “Charlie’s Angels” reboot that this wasn’t going to be just another campy version of the franchise. That campy, over-the-top “Charlie’s Angels” is exactly what Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz brought to the films in the early 2000s. But when you hire Kristen Stewart to star in the action film, you know it’s going to take the source material a bit more seriously.

Elizabeth Banks has been working to bring a new version of Charlie's Angels to the big screen and now she's found her next-generation Angels. Come inside to learn more!
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska will be the latest actresses to say "Good morning, Charlie!" as they've landed the lead roles in the upcoming big screen reboot. The initial report comes from Variety who goes on to say the film is being worked on as a sequel of sorts, following on from the original films and showing how the Townsend agency has grown and expanded to include more groups.
Elizabeth Banks is directing the film from a script she wrote with Jay Basu, and is planning on also playing Bosley this time around. That doesn't seem to jive with the idea of it following on from previous films, but perhaps there's some confusion regarding that particular story point.
Regardless,...

Drew Barrymore spent her day off with Cameron Diaz, and that's exactly how we like to spend our Summer Fridays, too. The 43-year-old actress recently shared a stunning, no-makeup selfie with her longtime friend and former Charlie's Angels costar. In her hashtag-filled caption, Drew sweetly described Cameron as an "old-school sister," and as for their impeccable complexions, Drew emphatically wrote, "#Sunscreenalways."
The two actresses have known each other since they were teenagers and first met at the coffee shop Drew worked at when she was 14. After working on the Charlie's Angels franchise, however, the two became great friends, and Cameron even went on to be a bridesmaid at Drew's wedding to Will Kopelman in 2012. After all this time, it's lovely to see this female friendship still going strong.

Becoming a part of the popular conversation in the mid-1970s was the phrase "Jiggle Television," which was designed by NBC to be an insult to ABC's programming of the time. Instead, it became a short-hand, if you will, to describe shows like Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman, the ladies of Charlie's Angels, and, of course, Three's Company. The latter focuses on Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers), Janet Wood (Joyce DeWitt), and Jack Tripper (John Ritter), living together platonically and pretending that Jack is gay to keep their landlords, the Ropers (Norman Fell and Audra Lindley), at bay. The show would turn out to be a combination of slapstick humor and sexual innuendo usually arising from misunderstanding — and it was a huge hit. "If you look back to '70s sitcoms," explains Chris Mann, author of 1998's Come and Knock on Our Door: A Hers and Hers and His Guide...

what TVs looked like in the 90s (history of sets here)Here's a must read for the day. Over at HitFix, Alan Sepinwall has reached his 20th anniversary as a TV journalist/critic . It's a fascinating piece on 20 years of writing about TV and how much has changed in that medium since 1996. It's a fun history and nostalgia ride, particularly if you're interested in serialized TV (the best assett of TV but it took decades for TV to get there). I love most of the article and I'll save the highlights for your reading there.
But I do want to vehemently disagree with this statement I've bolded below even though the general idea now that "everything is better with TV" is totally true.
I can appreciate nostalgia for those days, if for no other reason than that the beat was easier to cover when there weren't 400+ original scripted series airing every year.

Meryl Streep Unauthorized Biography Claims Dustin Hoffman Slapped Her Across the Face During Filming
Dustin Hoffman may have taken his method acting to another level when working with Meryl Streep on their award-winning 1979 film, Kramer vs. Kramer. In an excerpt from Michael Schulman's unauthorized biography, Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, in Vanity Fair, Kramer vs. Kramer director Robert Benton and producer Richard Fischoff recall a tense relationship between Streep and Hoffman during the filming of the movie. Both actors earned their first Oscars for taking on the roles of husband and wife, Ted and Joanna Kramer, who find themselves in a heated custody battle over their son, Billy Kramer (Justin Henry), after getting a divorce.
