The Last Unicorn

FAQ

Princess Alison Jocelyn from the books.

There's a scene right towards the end of the movie where Shmendrick and Molly are holding hands, he then lifts her onto a brown horse - there is a black horse in this scene too.

They turn as if they've seen something, then it immediately cuts to them sleeping and only the brown horse is there.

The cut scene should have been Shmendrick giving Princess Alison Jocelyn the black horse.

The Unicorn in the original book by Peter S. Beagle is described as quite vain and proud, and does not appreciate when she is compared to mortal beasts or mistaken for them. It is later that she reminds herself that it isn't really the fault of men who call her that - they don't know any better because they cannot see unicorns. This idea was carried over into the film.

It is never actually clear when the film is set, or what time/place. The Unicorn is immortal, and the period is very ambiguous, although the scenery, fashion and imagery implies Medieval Europe - however, the characters often speak with American accents, and use contemporary slang, e.g. Prince Lir saying "hi", Schmendrick the Magician saying "okay", and so-on. There are two popular theories as to why the Butterfly quotes and makes references to modern pop culture. 1: it was just intended to be funny and not particularly significant to the story. 2: the film is set in a time in the distant future, and the Butterfly has picked up references carried over from what would be considered modern 20th Century society into this future world.
