Ajay and Nirmala Sharma have been married for years. Nirmala now feels that Ajay is not attracted to her anymore, and in despair, confides about this matter with her brother. Her brother concocts a tale which results in Ajay having an affair with his Secretary, Anita Sood. Due to this affair Nirmala notices that Ajay has become more romantic and attentive with her. Her brother then concocts another romance, this time with Nirmala and Anita's boyfriend, Prof. Jeet Saxena. When Ajay finds out, he confronts Nirmala, and Nirmala admits to this, but shrugs it off as a mere friendship. Nirmala's brother concocts another plot whereby Jeet is to impersonate a private detective with a fictitious name of Dhurendra Bhatavdekar, and blackmail Ajay. Things get complicated when the real Bhatavdekar, a Police Inspector, and a uncle of Nirmala, gets involved, resulting in utter comical chaos.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)

Ajay Sharma (Amol Palekar) is a very successful entrepreneur who has now transformed into a workaholic and is seen ignoring his wife of seven years, Nirmala "Nimma" (Parveen Babi). Nimma is smoking hot and pines for Ajay's touch, but he is totally oblivious to her needs. Enter Ravi Kapoor (Deven Verma), a friend of Ajay notices Nirmala's loneliness and decides to fix things by rekindling the spark in their life. Ravi goes to Ajay's office and meets Anita and strikes a friendship with her..

Thus starts a hilarious comedy involving Ajay's secretary, Anita (Deepti Naval) and her boyfriend, Jeet (Farooq Sheikh) and a re-enactment of Pati, Patni Aur Woh. Jeet doesn't think too highly of Ajay, since he is Anita's boss and discourages Anita from volunteering to work late night shifts with him. Retired Judge Ajit Bannerjee (Om Prakash) & wife Rajlaxmi (Chhayadevi) are Anita's neighbor.

Ravi encourages Ajay to indulge in some light flirting with Anita. Now Ajay finally starts noticing Anita, what she wears, how she looks and so on. The Ravi tells Ajay to tell Anita that his wife is a cripple and he is a victim of an unhappy marriage. Ajay decides to recite this story to Anita to gain her affections. Next Ravi tells Ajay to take Anita to her favorite places and spend time with her outside the office. But Ravi photographs Anita and Ajay together, as they go out (Anita goes as Ajay wanted to celebrate her birthday). Jeet is not happy that Anita is spending too much time with Ajay. when Ajay buys dresses for Anita, he buys the same for Nimma too and takes her to same restaurants where he has lunch with Anita. The spark is back in Ajay and Nimma's life..

Jeet confronts Anita. Anita is ready to leave her job, but wants Jeet to marry her. Jeet listens to Anita's story and recognizes the plot from "Pati, Patni Aur Woh", a Hindi movie. Anita is alarmed and goes to meet Nimma. She tells Nimma how for the last 15-20 days Ajay has been lying to her and taking her places, and buying dresses. Nimma understands the story and shows her the same dress that Ajay bought for her. She tells Anita that Ajay is flirting with Nimma and not Anita. Nimma says due to this flirting, she got her husband back and asks Anita to go back and continue with whats going on.. even encourage Ajay, if required.. Meanwhile Ravi meets Jeet, who was waiting outside while Anita met Nimma

Nimma figures out that Ravi has been teaching Ajay how to flirt with Anita. Ravi now encourages Nimma to make Ajay jealous. Meanwhile Ajay has to back off when Anita insists on going on a out of town trip with her.. Then Ravi shows up at Jeet's house and alleges in front of Anita that he has received a gift from Reeta (his ex-girlfriend in Delhi), whom he used to date before he came to Bombay. Anita is now jealous Nimma takes up a secretary job. She comes late from work and tells Ajay how her new boss's wife is a paralytic. Ajay gets insanely jealous and asks Nimma to quit her job.

Ravi gets Jeet to play the role of Nimma's boss. He gets Ajay to attend lunch at a hotel where Nimma and Jeet are already sitting, pretending to be on a date. Ajay finds Nimma with a stranger and confronts her at home.. Nimma leaves home and goes to live with her sister Urmi (Poonam). Meanwhile Ravi then gets Anita to a park where Jeet was supposed to meet Reeta and Anita confronts Jeet red-handed. Anita starts beating Jeet and Ravi has to intervene admitting that there is no Reeta.

Next Ravu asks Jeet to visit Ajay, as Pvt detective Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar.. Jeet tells Ajay that Anita is the daughter of a famous boxer, who once killed a horse with a single blow.. Jeet tells Ajay to divorce Nimma, else all photos will be published in the papers. Turns out ACP Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar (Utpal Dutt) is an actual person and is a strict cop. Ajay meets Nimma tells her how he is being blackmailed by a detective named Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar.. Nimma is confused as she knows Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar as her uncle. she calls the real cop, who advises Ajay to fix a meeting with a blackmailer the next day. The real Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar reaches the meeting spot and arrests Jeet.

Ravi escapes and tells Anita that Jeet has been arrested. Anita calls Nimma and tells her that it was Jeet who was blackmailing Ajay as Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar. Nimma tells Ajay the truth and asks him to bail out Jeet. Meanwhile Ravi and Anita go to the police station and pose as doctors of the mental asylum and tell Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar that Jeet is a mental patient. Thats when Ajay arrives, but Ravi tells Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar that he is also an escaped patient and karate chops him to shut him up. Then Mr Banerjee arrives and Ravi tells Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar that he is also a patient and Dhurandhar Bhatawdekar locks him up. Finally Nimma arrives. She reveals the truth to her uncle and Ravi apologizes for his actions.
