FAQ

The Right Stuff

FAQ

Essentially, it was the sound barrier, which the Air Force had been trying to break for several years with no success. The USAF kept developing aircraft they thought could push past the upper limit of speed, just under Mach 1, about 700 mph. The phenomenon was called a demon because it claimed the lives of several pilots and thwarted many missions in attempts to break it. When Yeager breaks the barrier at the beginning of this movie, the demon is presented as an ominous sort of cloud in front of him. When he punches through the barrier, the demon is symbolically dispelled.

He's a symbolic representation of the Grim Reaper, who delivers the bad news to the pilot's next of kin if a mission fails.

Yet, while symbolic of death, he is actually, plain and simple, the local preacher whose job is to not only sing and preach at dead pilots' funerals, but to tell the widows (unaware they're widows) the bad news (then, later on, when he winds up at the takeoff site for Shepard, he has become more of a phantom or symbol or representation than a real person.

He's played by veteran actor Royal Dano, who had a long career depicting extremely serious, often sinister and.... very grim characters.

Comedic relief. The guys were required to give a sample of semen for the doctors records and having such an hirsute nurse checking in on them made a normally easy 'task' almost impossible.

No one has answered this question yet.

No, for the most part, it was just an expression to indicate that most of them crashed (and died) in the desert around Edwards Air Force Base, though a few might be buried locally on base at the edge of the desert.
