This version is one of the few true to Terence Rattigan's original intention: the same actor plays the Major and John, and the same actress portrays Ann and Sybil.
Sir Alan Bates and Julie Christie appeared in Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), The Go-Between (1971), and The Return of the Soldier (1982).
For John Schlesinger the last of four screen collaborations with Julie Christie, and the third of four with Alan Bates.
