Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Miami Vice (1984)

Goofs

Miami Vice

Edit

Continuity

How come the criminal underworld never heard of Cooper and Burnett being aliases for Tubbs and Crockett? After just a few arrests made by Crockett and Tubbs under the guise of Cooper and Burnett, every member of the crime family would shy away from doing business with Cooper and Burnett.

Revealing mistakes

In many shows, during a gun battle one of the people would be shooting an automatic pistol with the slide locked back.

Miscellaneous

In numerous episodes, the primary characters are involved in career-ending shootings and yet none are terminated as police officers, nor prosecuted for the offense. Some killings are clearly intentional murders, yet the detectives continue in their roles as if nothing happened.
While many may not have noticed, there is an abrupt edit in the Miami Vice theme song at the instant that the final two-bar arpeggio plays. This is at the visual cut from the two women in bikinis to the aerial footage of the boat race, at which point a key sound is suddenly cut off. This is the result of a physical splicing of the magnetic tape. The way a key sound is suddenly cut off at that instant is quite noticeable. This was due to haste on the part of the recording producer, the engineer, or Jan Hammer himself. It would have been easy to fix but nothing was ever done to correct it.
All of the window-mounted air conditioners are nothing but scavenged front panels. In a great many angled shots one can clearly see through the frosted windows that there is no external components. One can also notice that the vents (the circular, slatted elements) are often randomly turned from one show to the next, which is obviously a bit of mischief by the crew.

Plot holes

Despite being "undercover" police officers, both Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs appear in situations where drug dealers and other criminals would be able to discover that they are not who they claim to be. Suspects are even brought into their offices and can see that Tubbs and Crockett are sworn law enforcement officers.

Character error

In the beginning of the episode "Calderon's Return, Part 1", a hired assassin, supposedly one of the best in the world, is seen putting on surgical gloves to keep his fingerprints off the gun he is about to use. However, before he puts on the gloves, he moves the gun off of them by touching the gun butt with his fingertips.
Ricardo Tubbs could certainly quit the NYPD and join the Miami-Dade police force. However, it would take him years to be assigned as a detective on that force as there would be dozens of officers with seniority over him.
