Back in the soap opera glory days of the 1980s, I remember well Demi Moore‘s short stint on the popular “General Hospital.” With her distinctive gravelly voice, movie star beauty and strong personality, it was obvious that the small screen couldn’t contain her, and that she would go on to bigger things.
Demi Gene Guynes was born on November 11 in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Following a difficult childhood, she left school her junior year and did some modeling before meeting and marrying musician Freddy Moore, with whom she co-wrote three songs. She had a couple of small film roles before landing the “General Hospital” gig in 1983. Then a series of popular films beginning with “Blame It On Rio” in 1984 led to an impressive string of blockbuster films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, making her one of the biggest stars of the era.

Our odyssey through the work of Michael Caine reaches a grim nadir: the 1984 comedy Blame It On Rio. Brace yourselves, readers.
Michael Caine showed no sign of slowing down as he entered his third decade as a leading man. The 1980s would see him win his first Academy Award (Hannah and Her Sisters), tackle new genres such as horror (The Hand) and shark-based revenge movie (Jaws: The Revenge) whilst continuing to work with interesting new auteurs like Brian De Palma (Dressed to Kill) as well as old friends from classic Hollywood such as John Huston (Escape to Victory).
Film by film, I’ll be taking a look at Caine’s 1980s filmography to see what hidden gems I can unearth alongside the more familiar classics…
Spoilers for Blame it on Rio lay ahead…

NCIS spawned one of many spin-offs when it inspired the creation of NCIS Los Angeles. But Michael Weatherly initially felt it was a bad idea to overlap with the second series.

NCIS had a successful experiment with spin-offs that started with NCIS Los Angeles. As its title implies, Los Angeles followed a group of federal agents hunting down dangerous criminals in the city. Starring LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, the show was a success from the start. Its debut episode was the second most watched show at the time, only behind NCIS‘ season seven premiere.
Although he seemed excited about the prospect of an NCIS spin-off, Weatherly felt it was a bad idea for Tony Dinozzo to crossover with the other show. He believed he worked best alongside his familiar crew.

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.

Hollywood has a long history of remaking European movies, with mixed results. For every "Vanilla Sky" or "The Talented Mr. Ripley", there is a "City of Angels" or (pass the barf bag) "Blame it on Rio." At first glance, Chris Marker's remarkable experimental contemplation of time and memory, "La Jetee," doesn't look like the kind of thing that would translate into a box office hit starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, yet it was the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's "12 Monkeys."

Kenneth Wannberg, composer and Emmy-winning music editor who worked on nearly half of all John Williams’ films dating back to the late 1960s, died Jan. 27 at his home in Florence, Oregon. He was 91.
Wannberg was best known as Williams’ music editor, working closely with the composer on more than 50 of his films. He assisted Williams throughout the scoring process, from providing detailed descriptions of sequences to be scored to more technical aspects such as trimming or modifying music during the last stages of post-production.
He music-edited the first six “Star Wars” films, the first three “Indiana Jones” films and such other landmark Williams scores as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

June, when it’s not “bustin’ out all over” is vacation time, so break out of your rut and fly away to exotic places. Or maybe just watch someone else do that at the ole’ multiplex. Yes, that “someone”, the story’s main character, truly needs to “shake things up”. He’s a middle-aged American writer who’s dealing with a “rough patch’ in his relationship. And since he writes travel articles, what better excuse for a “change of scenery”. Could he be bound for a pacific island, sipping one of those umbrella drinks as the sand squishes between his toes?. Or even south of the border, at a swanky resort. You’re not even close. His preferred sand is over in Israel. And rather than indulging in a fancy five-star hotel, he’s brokered a sweet deal on a Sublet.

From video store clerk to eventual New York Times bestseller. It makes for quite the trajectory, eh?
That’s still clearly Quentin Tarantino’s thinking too. The mercurial and celebrated filmmaker behind such modern classics as Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds has teased for years that he looks forward to the day he can retire from filmmaking and leave his filmography at an allegedly perfect 10 films. He’s been discussing it since at least Django Unchained, and as he’s approached that mythical “tenth” film (he counts both volumes of Kill Bill as one movie), his opinion hasn’t changed on the matter. In fact, in a new interview with Pure Cinema Podcast (via Collider), Tarantino sounded audibly thrilled about the idea of settling down and being a family man author.
“Most directors have horrible last movies,” Tarantino said on the audio interview. “Usually their worst movies are their last movies.

It’s been three months, and the end is here! “Project Runway” concluded its 17th season on Thursday night with “The Final Runway.” It was an especially meaningful moment since this season marked the return of the series to Bravo after spending the last 10 years on Lifetime. It was also the first season without original host Heidi Klum and mentor Tim Gunn, who were replaced by Karlie Kloss and Christian Siriano, respectively. So how did the show wrap up? Did the right designer win? Scroll down for our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

“Project Runway” is down to five designers, but are they the right five? All of the eliminations are decided by judges Karlie Kloss, Elaine Welteroth, Brandon Maxwell and a number of guest judges who have cycled through over the course of the season. But while mentor Christian Siriano is able to guide the designers over the course of each challenge, he wasn’t given a Save like his predecessor Tim Gunn. Was that a mistake? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
Gunn didn’t get to critique the designers’ finished looks or decide the eliminations either. But he had something just as valuable: the Tim Gunn Save. Given his expertise and his close working relationships with the designers, he was given the power to overrule a judges’ decision and rescue one contestant from elimination, starting in season 12. And some of those saves turned out to be quite fruitful.

A cop, an Emt, a postal worker, a sanitation worker, a school teacher and a ferry deckhand walk into a bar. The cop says, “What are we doing in this bar? We’ve got a runway to get to!” … Okay, so my comedy needs work, but the work that really matters in NYC is done by the public employees “Project Runway” celebrated with this week’s challenge. In “New York City of Dreams,” the six remaining designers had to create dream dresses for the hard-working women who keep the city running. So whose dreams came true, and whose dreams turned into nightmares? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The six designers who went into this week’s episode were Colombian craftsman Sebastian Grey, minimalist maven Tessa Clark, corset-crazed Garo Sparo, urban puffer king Jamall Osterholm, Baltimore’s favorite son Bishme Cromartie and eccentric extraordinaire Hester Sunshine.

In “The Stitch is Back,” last week’s “Project Runway” challenge inspired by Elton John, designer Tessa Clark landed in the judges’ bottom three for her too-subtle performance look. It was her first time getting a low score, which means there’s only one “Runway” contestant left who has yet to land in the bottom three: Sebastian Grey. Is he destined to ride his consistency all the way to the finale, or is he due for a misstep?
Grey was an early judges’ favorite, winning the second design challenge, “The Future is Here.” Then he was the runner-up in the very next challenge, “All the Rage.” But that’s it. While he hasn’t gotten a single low score from the judges this season, he hasn’t gotten another high score either. He has been safe for the last five challenges in a row, and he has gotten by far...

“Project Runway” started with 16 designers, and it’s down to 7, so it’s getting harder and harder for the judges to decide who should go home. Everyone who is still in the competition has impressed the judges repeatedly over the course of the season, but there’s just one who still hasn’t won a single design challenge: Venny Etienne. There may be a target on his back unless he steps it up effective immediately because they’re culling the herd and he stands out in the worst way. You can make your predictions for this week’s show right here in our predictions center.
Venny started the season with a high score in the “First Impressions” challenge, and he remained consistent for several weeks thereafter, but things have been rough for him in the last four episodes. He landed in the bottom two three times. He was almost eliminated with a bad,...

As a man who enjoys fashion and costumes, I’m always excited when “Project Runway” does menswear, but I probably wasn’t as excited as the designers were for their Elton John challenge in “The Stitch is Back.” Bravo previewed just how thirsty the designers were for their hunky models. But did that keep them from getting their work done? By the end of the episode, who was “Still Standing,” and who said “Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
On paper, an Elton John challenge sounded ideal for avant garde menswear designer Jamall Osterholm, who desperately needed another comeback after getting stuck at the bottom of the heap during last week’s “Blame it on Rio” team challenge when he had immunity. Garo Sparo‘s extravagant, corseted club looks also seemed like they would be a perfect fit — literally and figuratively.

Fashion is fickle, so “Project Runway” always has its ups and downs, but throughout this season the person I feel has gotten the short end of the stick isn’t one of the designers, it’s one of the models. Kate has been subjected to one bad outfit after another, and it’s not because she’s incapable of wearing clothes. It’s because the designers seem incapable of dressing full-figured women.
This season’s models have diverse sizes, shapes, races and even gender identities (Mimi is the show’s first transgender model), but it has been a recurring theme all season: the designers are scared to death of curvy women. In the season premiere Kate was dressed by Frankie Lewis and ended up in an infamous blue body suit that was practically falling apart.

Stanley Donen, the former Broadway chorus boy who made a name for himself in Hollywood directing classic musical films like “On the Town” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” has died at age 94.
One of Donen’s sons confirmed the news on Saturday to Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips. A rep for Donen did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Donen helped reinvent the big-screen musical, with a series of hits that included 1954’s “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” 1957’s “The Pajama Game,” 1958’s “Damn Yankees!” and 1957’s “Funny Face,” with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
Not only did he integrate song, dance and story in a way that enlivened MGM musicals of the era, but he was also a technical innovator in an era before CGI, as in the memorable scene in 1950’s “Royal Wedding” when Fred Astaire seemed to dance on the walls and ceiling while...

The 1980s were a decade of many cultural phenomenon such as the teen angst film, the splatter horror film, the zombie films, and of course the teen sex comedy. Bob Clark’s Porky’s (1981) was a huge success both financially and artistically. To this day it’s still one of the funniest movies ever made. Nosferatu: Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, above) is negotiations to star in a new version of Nosferatu. Actor, playwright and Oscar-nominated screenwriter who took the part of the tyrannical comedian King Kaiser in the 1982 film comedy My Favourite Year
Tough cookies with soft centres were the stock-in-trade of the actor Joseph Bologna, who has died aged 82. Cinema audiences warmed to him from his performances as gruff, long-suffering or domineering fathers and father figures.
He was the tyrannical comedian King Kaiser, modelled on Sid Caesar, in the nostalgic comedy My Favourite Year (1982), starring Peter O’Toole as an alcoholic former matinee idol. He played one of Gene Wilder’s drinking buddies in The Woman in Red and a man whose teenage daughter (Michelle Johnson) is having an affair with his best friend (Michael Caine) in Blame It on Rio (both 1984). In Big Daddy (1999), he was Adam Sandler’s disapproving father; initially unimpressed when his son adopts a child (“He’d be better off living in a dumpster than living with you!

Bologna in "My Favorite Year".
By Lee Pfeiffer
Actor and playwright Joseph Bologna has died from cancer at age 82. Bologna and his wife of 52 years, actress/writer Renee Taylor, were nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay they co-wrote (with David Zelag Goodman) for the 1971 comedy "Lovers and Other Strangers". The two collaborated frequently on and off screen. Bologna was noted primarily for his affiliation with comedies. He and Taylor co-wrote 22 plays and also appeared frequently on television but both had successful solo careers as well. His most memorable big screen role was as King Kaiser, the acerbic TV variety show host who was based on Sid Caesar in the hit 1982 comedy "My Favorite Year". Last month, Bologna attended a 35th anniversary screening of the film. His other feature films include "Made for Each Other" (co-written with Taylor), "The Big Bus", "Blame It On Rio", "The Woman in Red" and...

From killer bees to Steven Seagal, Michael Caine's seen it all. We celebrate five hilarious performances in five very bad B-movies...
"If there is one thing worse than being offered bad scripts it's being offered none at all," Michael Caine once noted - an admission that might explain some of the roles he's taken on over his long and often wonderful career.
Michael Caine may have attained national treasure status now, but from the late 70s to the middle of the 90s, classic roles like Dr Frank Bryant in Educating Rita and Scrooge The Muppet Christmas Carol were interspersed with some - shall we say - less acclaimed movies. Yet even when the production values were awful, the script stank and the films flopped, Michael Caine's performances often remained fascinating. This isn't to say he was necessarily putting his heart and soul into them -...

Few films bring us as much joy as Singin’ in the Rain. According to ShowBiz411, director Stanley Donen has a new movie on the way — his first time behind the camera since a 1999 TV movie and almost 30 years since his last theatrical feature, Blame It on Rio. The new project is cowritten with his significant other, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and The Heartbreak Kid director Elaine May, and will be produced by Mike Nichols. The legendary partnership is promising a “wry” comedic tale about the making of a movie and everything that goes wrong with it — a familiar formula, but a welcome one. Other details are sparse so far, but the website does reveal a list of names who read for investors: Christopher Walken, Charles Grodin, Ron...

Legendary director Stanley Donen, the helmer of such classics as "Singing in the Rain" and "Charade", is considering his first directorial effort since 1984's "Blame it on Rio".
The 89-year-old filmmaker has reportedly written a comedy script with his significant other, actress and filmmaker Elaine May. Mike Nichols is already on board the project as a producer.
No details are available on the story other than it's said to be a film about the making of a film where everything than can go wrong, does.
In fact a private reading for investors was recently held with the likes of Christopher Walken, Charles Grodin, Ron Rifkin, and Jeannie Berlin involved.
Donen's first feature was 1949's "On the Town" which lead to numerous film classics including "Royal Wedding," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Funny Face".
May wrote "Heaven Can Wait", performed an uncredited re-write on "Tootsie," and directed "The Heartbreak Kid...

While I know most tend to associate actor Zach Galligan with the movie 'Gremlins,' for me growing up I was always a bigger fan of his portrayal of Mark in the 'Waxwork' movies. After all, he got to fight all the classic Universal monsters, go up against the Waxwork proprietor played by the great David Warner and was friends (and potentially more?) with mega-babes Michelle Johnson (China) and Deborah Foreman (Sarah). I've always had a great deal of affection for the first 'Waxwork' because not only is it a perfect blend of horror and comedy, but because it was also an all out monster mash that didn't skimp out on the monsters or the gore. Writer/director Anthony Hickox (who also later helmed 'Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth,' 'Warlock: Armageddon,' and 'Sundown: A Vampire In Retreat') teamed up once more with...

Welcome to the 50 club, Demi Moore!
Demi Moore has enthralled us throughout her 28-year-long career, but long before Moore was one of the highest paid actress in film history or a gossip magazine favorite, she was just a struggling 16-year-old, attempting to live independently off a fledgling-modeling career. At 19, the New Mexico native had transitioned into acting, landing a role on "General Hospital." She made the jump to the big screen in "Blame It On Rio" opposite Michael Caine as his daughter; by the release of "St. Elmo’s Fire" one year later, she was a star.
For years Demi was one of the premiere actresses in Hollywood, going on to star in successful films like “About Last Night…,” “Ghost,” “A Few Good Men,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “G.I. Jane.” Of her 1986 performance in “About Last Night…,” movie critic Robert Ebert wrote, “Moore is especially impressive. There isn't a romantic note...

Damsels in Distress: witty, whimsical and deeply offbeat, it grew on me, mainly thanks to the wonderful Greta Gerwig
@StephWhalley
Sticky sweet & naughty with lashings of humour & a sprinkling of nineties nostalgia: everything an American Pie Reunion should be!
@RedAppleChango
Lockout: Ott action sci-fi. Very 90s vibe, in a good way. See if you like Timecop or Sudden Death (who doesn't?)

You're getting too old for this: 25 years ago, on March 6, 1987, "Lethal Weapon" was released. The buddy-cop thriller not only cemented Mel Gibson's status as a household name after playing good-natured loose-canon (as opposed to now) Martin Riggs, but also created a social phenomenon still relevant to this day: "I'm getting too old for this shit."
The catchphrase, said numerous times throughout the "Lethal Weapon" series by Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has appeared in many movies over the last 25 years, often times in reference to the put-upon police detective himself. (The recent trailer for "Men In Black 3" features Will Smith uttering a PG variation on Murtaugh's famous one-liner.)
What you might not know? That "Lethal Weapon" wasn't the first film to utilize some form of the defeated turn-of-phrase. From "North by Northwest" and "The Sting" to Murtaugh himself, enjoy a mash-up of movie characters getting too old for this.

"The Artist" producer Thomas Langmann and star Jean DuJardin are re-teaming for a remake of Claude Berri's 1977 French rom-com "One Wild Moment" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The original follows two fathers and best friends, Pierre and Jacques, who take their teen daughters on a holiday to the Côte d'Azur.
Pierre and Jacques' daughter become lovers and when Pierre wants out, the girl tells her father but leaves Pierre's name out. Jacques soon enlists Pierre's help to find out who seduced his daughter.
Vincent Cassel, who worked with Langmann on the "Mesrine" movies, will co-star in the film. The film was previously remade into the Michael Caine-led early 80's comedy "Blame it on Rio".

Star of film The Artist and all-around charming guy Jean Dujardin is probably going to be getting a lot more attention now that he’s won a Golden Globe for his work on Michel Hazanavicius’ well-liked silent film throwback. As a matter of fact, The Hollywood Reporter already has word of a project in Dujardin’s future that has my interest peaked. The Artist producer Thomas Langmann has told the trade that his next project will be a remake of Claude Berri’s 1977 French release One Wild Moment (Un moment d’égarement), a film that was about two adult best friends running into some issues when one of their daughters falls for the other. You know, romantically. If that plot sounds familiar to you, maybe that’s because One Wild Moment has already been remade once, as the 1984 English language film Blame It On Rio, which starred names like Michael Caine and Demi Moore and had some...
