This film could serve as a spiritual sequel to the Twilight Zone episode "Night of the Meek." In that episode, Art Carney plays a department store Santa Claus that comes across a magical bag that dispenses gifts to anyone wanting something for Christmas. At the end of the episode, Carney's character says his only wish would be "to do this every year." Immediately after, he comes across a sleigh, reindeer, and elf that takes him to the North Pole as he then becomes the real Santa Claus.
When Santa (Art Carney) tries to prove to Claudia that he's Santa, he knows that she was living in Houston, Texas at an early age. In real-life, Jaclyn Smith (Claudia) was born in Houston, Texas.
Scott Grimes (David) also appeared in the Christmas TV Movie "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear", which also aired in 1984.
