- Uniformed Police Officer: Wes, Beryl Thibodeaux from the rape something or other wants to see you.
- Wes Block: Where is she?
- Uniformed Police Officer: In the reception room.
- Wes Block: Tell her I'm out.
- Uniformed Police Officer: I did. She said she'd wait.
- Wes Block: Good. Tell her I'm out of town.
- [Wes turns around and sees Beryl standing there, she who gives him a sarcastic grin]
- Beryl Thibodeaux: Welcome back.
- Wes Block: Twenty-eight years ago I borrowed 40 dollars from my father, packed up an old, beat up suitcase, took a bus and came here. I was seventeen at the time. While I walked through the French Quarter, I looked out over the Mississippi and swore I'd never leave.
- Beryl Thibodeaux: Ever come close?
- Wes Block: Only once. When I looked down and saw that the suitcase was missing.
- Beryl Thibodeaux: Do you investigate many sexual crimes?
- Wes Block: Why?
- Beryl Thibodeaux: I was wondering if they've had any... effect on you.
- Wes Block: Well, they did make me want to treat my wife a little more tenderly.
- Beryl Thibodeaux: How did she respond?
- Wes Block: She said she wasn't interested in tenderness.
- Wes Block: [picked up his youngest daughter] Your dad had a date tonight.
- [Amanda climbs onto his back]
- Penny Block: Who with?
- Wes Block: Uh, somebody he met.
- Penny Block: Where'd you go?
- Wes Block: Out on the river.
- Penny Block: Is she nice?
- Wes Block: Oh, yeah.
- Amanda Block: Do you like her?
- Wes Block: Yeah, she's nice.
- Amanda Block: Did you kiss her?
- Wes Block: Hey, come on, give me a break, will you?
- Penny Block: [phone starts ringing] I bet that's her right now. And she wants to see you again. And you can have a hard-on *any-time you want.*
- Dr. Yarlofsky: There's a darkness inside all of us, Wes: you, me, and the man down the street. Some have it under control. Others act it out. The rest of us try to walk a tightrope between the two.
- Det. Molinari: [noticing that Wes is looking at the full moon] You think it brings the crazies out?
- Wes Block: They're always out.
- Becky Jacklin: Ice?
- Wes Block: What for?
- [getting down to business:]
- Wes Block: You didn't mention you knew her.
- Becky Jacklin: You didn't ask.
- [as they exit the kitchen, she unwraps an ice-sucker]
- Becky Jacklin: Besides... I thought you came here to... bowl.
- Wes Block: You recall seeing her with anyone last night?
- Becky Jacklin: [they settle in the living room; she brings the ice-sucker to her mouth] Yeah. There were a couple of guys.
- Wes Block: Who?
- Becky Jacklin: Customers. You know, guys trying to hit on her.
- [starts sucking]
- Wes Block: She let any of them?
- Becky Jacklin: [shakes her head] No. She thought they were creeps.
- Wes Block: What about other nights?
- Becky Jacklin: [smiles, eyes sparkling] If she liked someone, she might have done something about it.
- Wes Block: But by and large, just one-night stands?
- Becky Jacklin: Are there any other kind?
- [shakes her head]
- Wes Block: And you two knew each other... very well?
- Becky Jacklin: Well enough.
- Wes Block: Did she ever mention anything about anybody using handcuffs on her?
- Becky Jacklin: [pausing her sucking on the ice lolly to answer:] I think so. She liked to get pretty kinky.
- Wes Block: Remember who it might've been?
- Becky Jacklin: I think it was... a cop.
- [Wes' eyes widen]
- Becky Jacklin: Who knows? Maybe it was you.
- [shakes her head]
- Amanda Block: Where did you go tonight?
- Wes Block: Out to look for something.
- Amanda Block: Did you find it?
- Wes Block: I found out one thing. You know what it is?
- [Amanda looks up at him; curious]
- Wes Block: That you should be in bed getting some sleep.
- Penny Block: [in car, as her father drives] What's a hard-on, Daddy?
- [causing Wes to sputter on his soda drink, and Amanda too]
- Penny Block: I heard Amanda say it, but she won't tell me what it means.
- Wes Block: Well, darling, it's... it's, uh... When a man is attracted... to a woman... he, uh, *likes* her. Understand?
- Penny Block: No.
- [shakes her head]
- Wes Block: Well, he likes her in... in a certain way.
- [Amanda smiles]
- Penny Block: Why?
- Wes Block: Well, sweetheart, male bears like... female bears and... male bees like female bees... and, uh, occasionally they get together and...
- Amanda Block: Dad...
- [Wes looks at her expectantly]
- Amanda Block: Forget it.
- [Wes takes another sip of his drink]
