It's always exciting when a new horror film gets picked up, particularly by distributors like A24 or Neon. These companies have a keen eye for great horror content, and more often than not, the films they acquire are usually both unique and boundary-pushing. One of these indie powerhouses just snagged the worldwide rights to a new body horror, and based on what we know so far about this movie, it's something you're going to want to see.
We're talking about Neon, the studio that delivered what is arguably the best horror film of 2024, Longlegs. If you haven't seen Longlegs, maybe you're familiar with other Neon horror movies such as Immaculate, Cuckoo, Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, the company has another horror flick to add to its lineup, and we're hoping it hits theaters this year.
The film is titled Together, and it stars real-life husband and wife Alison Brie and Dave Franco.

Few filmmakers had a better 1970s than Sidney Lumet. While he was more prolific than most of the decade's top directors, knocking out 11 movies over a 10-year span, and did find time to helm one of the worst musicals in motion picture history (a badly bungled adaptation of "The Wiz"), when Lumet got ahold of the right material, he made classics like "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," and "Network."
There isn't a more electric movie in Lumet's oeuvre than "Dog Day Afternoon." Based on a true story, the 1975 critical and commercial hit centers on a bank robbery in Brooklyn carried out by Sonny Wortzik, an amateur crook desperate to pay for his lover's gender-affirming surgery. When the heist quickly goes south, Sonny and his associates find themselves stuck holding hostages while cops swarm the building. The defiant Sonny scrambles to negotiate...

Ari Aster’s feature directorial debut Hereditary is a psychological horror story that takes the audience on a wild and terrifying ride along with the Graham family. Ari Aster's filmmaking career began with short films in the late 2000s and became widely known thanks to his 2011 short film The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. After a couple more short films, Aster made his feature-length directorial debut in 2018 with Hereditary, also written by him.
Hereditary follows the Graham family, who are grieving the death of their secretive grandmother. This begins to reveal a series of disturbing family secrets, as well as unleashing a series of sinister occurrences, including one more family tragedy. The Grahams soon learn they are no longer safe and are being watched, but the reasons behind all that are beyond what they could have ever imagined. Hereditary is not only very well-written and directed, but it also has...

Stories mutate over time, adapting to both storytellers and their audience in often unpredictable ways. This is precisely why folks will still flock to creature features about monsters they’ve seen a million times before, as it’s always fun to find out how filmmakers have managed to update the source material. And when it comes to classic monsters that have gone through cinematic makeovers, it’s hard to compete with the good-old vampire.
From foreign sex symbols to zombie-like hordes and even mindless bat-monsters, vampires have proven to be an oddly versatile creature for filmmakers of every disposition. And in honor of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake revamping one of the most iconic depictions of blood-sucking ghouls in cinema history, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest vampire designs in horror!

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has redefined the iconic vampire story, but Buffy tackled comparable territory 25 years earlier with its subversive Dracula episode.
“Your power is rooted in darkness. You must feel it.”
“No. You know what I feel? Bored.”
This article contains heavy spoilers for 2024’s Nosferatu and Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Society has been telling vampire stories for over a century, whether it’s the austere gothic horror of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, more palatable and playful stories, like the Twilight series and The Vampire Diaries, or something in between, such as Fright Night or The Lost Boys. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu harkens back to the vampire’s vicious roots and his interpretation of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 original became one of 2024’s biggest horror movies and it’s still going strong. Since its end in 1997, "Married... with Children" has maintained a legacy as one of the strangest and longest-running television shows of its kind. The Fox sitcom was, on its face, a standard multi-camera sitcom about a dysfunctional family and the colorfully zany characters that breezed in and out of their suburban enclosure. At the same time, it bucked contemporary genre conventions, daring to push the boundaries of acceptable behavior for sitcom protagonists while leaning into the surrealist subgenre -- which, relative to the tamer landscape of TV back in the late '80s and '90s, surely must've surprised some audiences.
And yet, as odd and abrasive as the show could be, the series was reliably anchored by a powerhouse cast of comedic actors at the top of their game. This included Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, and Christina Applegate, all three of whom have been receptive to revive the series...

Art Evans, the actor who appeared in Die Hard 2, A Soldier’s Story and so many more movies and TV shows beginning in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 82. The cause of death was diabetes.
Art Evans had well over 100 credits to his name, normally playing smaller roles. One of these key ones was in Die Hard 2, in which he played an air traffic controller who aids in John McClane’s latest fight against terrorists. Another came in 1984 with A Soldier’s Story, co-starring alongside Howard E. Rollins Jr. and Adolph Caesar as an army private. While Caesar would end up receiving the bulk of the attention (receiving Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations), Evans was also making his own mark.
Art Evans got his career started the previous decade — after time studying theater and on the stage — earning his first credit on sitcom Chico and the Man.

At 82, Art Evans, a talented character actor known for his vast work in film and television, passed away. His diabetes, which he had been fighting for years, caused problems that led to his death on December 21. Babe Evans, his wife, confirmed the news and paid heartfelt tribute to his life and career.
“Art was not only an incredible actor but a devoted husband, friend, and source of light to everyone who knew him,” she said. “We will miss his laugh, passion, and love of life very much.” Even though our hearts are heavy, we are proud of the joy and influence he leaves behind.
Evans began his acting career at Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being. He was born in Los Angeles on March 27, 1942. He made it to Broadway and played the lead role in “The Amen Corner” in 1965. In the middle of the 1970s, he moved on to TV,...

Nearly every culture tells similar folk tales about creepy old hags that practice witchcraft and prey on unsuspecting children, with this irrational fear being at the heart of several real-life tragedies that ended with innocent women being put to death. That’s why I find the idea of redemptive witchcraft stories like The Good Witch and even the ultra-successful Wicked adaptation so fascinating, as despite having been commodified as one of the cutesy mascots of the Halloween season, witches are still at the heart of many of our most frightening stories.
Naturally, this also extends to horror movies, with filmmakers depicting terrifying acts of witchcraft on screen since the very dawn of the medium. And with so many creepy broom-riders out there, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest witches in film. After all, there’s a lot more to these sinister spellcasters than black cats and candy-houses.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.
Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.

The best Child's Play movies reveal just why the evil doll Chucky is such a beloved horror movie villain. 1988 Child's Play movie started out as a script called Batteries Not Included by writer Don Mancini which was later retitled Blood Buddy. The initial concept was that a boy named Andy was given a doll that was filled with fake blood but would later come alive when Andy accidentally mixed his own blood with it. The doll, who would become known as the infamous Chucky, would come to life when Andy went to sleep, acting out his unconscious desire to kill.
When Tom Holland (Fright Night) came on board to direct Child's Play, the concept was completely changed. A serial killer named Charles Lee Ray transfers his soul into a Chucky doll just before his human body dies. With his soul trapped in a toy, he needs to transfer his evil...

Musician Brian Eno once claimed that the limitations of a medium are exactly what people will miss about it once those limitations are gone. That’s probably why so many modern horror titles opt to embrace styles and mechanics that were once criticized for being cheap and obtuse (like low-poly graphics and tank controls). If you ask me, I’d also argue that this is why we’ve seen a resurgence in movie tie-in games despite licensed productions once being considered the scourge of the video game industry.
And in honor of recent releases like RetroRealms Arcade (which is actually way more enjoyable than most of the licensed titles it’s trying to emulate), we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six retro horror movie tie-in games that time forgot. After all, from the Commodore 64 to the Atari 2600, there are plenty of old video games that benefit from some spooky source material.

Remakes and reboots can be extremely controversial, particularly when theyre adapting a film thats already good in its own right, but theres always space for new takes on classic stories in todays cinematic climate. Some of the most interesting and innovative horror movies in recent memory have been remakes of existing stories, but this doesnt prevent them from still being amazing stories on their own. The best horror remakes are those that change the original in some way, giving them a level of credibility beyond merely retelling the story.
But in addition to these great reboots, there are also several horror remakes that never should have been made, which can give the entire concept a fairly bad reputation. Viewers begin to associate remakes with cheap retellings of already good stories, but thats not the truth in most cases. The majority of remakes exist for a reason, whether thats to introduce...

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long, but this is truly the most wonderful time of the year. For many of us, Halloween is our favorite holiday – and to celebrate, the staff at JoBlo Horror Originals has put together a new video to showcase some of our favorite horror movie quotes of all time. This ranges from cult classic lines we repeat to our friends in private to popular lines that are referenced in all of pop culture, and we’re getting into them all. Now, I’m sure there will be some notable exclusions, as we did have to abide by strict copyright rules, but we certainly did our best to include the best of the best. From “Get away from her, you bitch!” to “I have to return some video tapes,” (American Psycho) we’ve got...

1989 was the year director J.R. Bookwalter’s debut feature, the zombie epic The Dead Next Door (which Sam Raimi not-so-secretly had a hand in), made its way out into the world – and it also happens be the year when his follow-up feature, the “dark, splatter-drenched” oddball comic book homage Robot Ninja (watch it Here) was released. Thirty-five years later, Robot Ninja has now received the novelization treatment and the result, Robot Ninja: The Official Novelization by Damien Casey, is now available from Encyclopocalypse Publications! Copies can be purchased at This Link.
Shot in Ohio for $15,000, with David DeCoteau credited as an executive producer, Robot Ninja features cameos by Burt Ward (best known for playing Robin in the ’60s Batman TV series) and legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley and has the following synopsis: Leonard Miller (Michael Todd) is a frustrated artist. James Wan has more than earned his inclusion in the pantheon of horror maestros. Over a 20-year career that started in 2004 with "Saw," Wan has mostly stayed true to the genre, making films about monsters human, ghostly and adorably parasitic (who doesn't love that ghastly cutie Gabriel from "Malignant"?). His films are fun, funny, and almost always terrifying in surprising ways (i.e. when he's not making superhero or action movies). Wan works an audience like a showman who's carefully studied the tricks of his predecessors, so when he makes a list of his favorite movies, you'd do well to add those titles to your viewing queue -- especially if you're an aspiring director yourself.
As a horror aficionado, Wan is also worth listening to when he breaks down his favorites by subgenre. Even if he's never knocked out a zombie flick or a werewolf movie, learning his preferences can...

The best vampire movies have long been a staple of the horror genre since Georges Mlis' The House of The Devil. For years, they played a huge part in the genre. Classics like Dracula (1931), Ganja & Hess (1973), and Nosferatu The Vampyr (1979) all proved the importance and versatility of the genre. It is easy now to look at the vampire film as an oversaturated sub-genre, but with the boom of slasher movies in the 1980s, there came somewhat of a drought.
Hits like Fright Night (1985) and The Lost Boys (1987) proved few and far between, leading to a decade filled with more obscure cult classics. Vampire movies ended up taking on all sorts of different forms; anthologies, comedies, and even kids' films. Many of these have come to be well renowned within the horror community, but have yet to fully receive the appreciation they deserve.

Spooky season is upon us, folks, and this week's Empire Podcast is even more of a horror show than usual! First up to send shivers down your spine, Chris Hewitt talks to actor Naomi Scott about her fabulous performance in Parker Finn's scary sequel Smile 2 [23:26 — 37:26 approx]. Then, the team — this week comprising Chris, James Dyer, Ben Travis and, in a rare appearance, our news editor Beth Webb — tackle two horror-related questions from listeners, including the horror flicks they think should have been nominated for Best Picture, and an impromptu Mount Rushmore of vampire films (we can only apologise for Beth's sacrilegious shout for the Fright Night remake over the original!)
Elsewhere, much movie news is discussed, including the addition of Krypto the Superdog to James Gunn's Superman, new trailers for A24 fantasy adventure The Legend Of Ochi and Aardman animation Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and confirmation...

Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

Horror movies are closely associated with rapid succession sequels than they are legacy sequels. (How many years did we have a new “Saw” and/or “Paranormal Activity” sequel to look forward to?) But there are still a fair amount of legacy horror sequels – follow-ups that take much longer to marinate than the traditional sequel – and these are the ones that were definitely worth the wait.
Universal “Psycho II” (1983)
The first true legacy horror sequel was a follow-up to perhaps the most celebrated horror movie ever, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 shocker “Psycho.” “Psycho II” was directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Franklin, whose previous movie “Road Games” is one of the greatest Australian thrillers ever, and was written by Tom Holland, who would go on to direct future classics “Fright Night” and “Child’s Play.”
The sequel sees Norman Bates (once again played by Anthony Perkins) finally released from prison and attempting to enjoy a normal life,...

“Salem’s Lot” (2024), based on Stephen King’s chilling novel, brings to life the terrifying story of a small town plagued by a vampire infestation. Colin Farrell's career has been filled with roles that have pushed him to explore a wide range of characters, many of which have gone overlooked by mainstream audiences. Known for his fierce intensity, Farrells ability to inhabit flawed and complex figures has often been overshadowed by his more commercially successful roles in films like the Penguin in The Batman and Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Yet, many of Colin Farrell's best roles and most intriguing performances come from movies that didnt quite reach box office heights or vast critical acclaim.
Farrell has consistently delivered compelling portrayals that deserve a closer look, from thrillers to dark comedies and indie dramas. His commitment to nuance, even in less celebrated films, is a testament to his skill and why he has remained so relevant in the film industry for over 30 years. Writers may come up with nightmares and directors bring them to life, but everyone knows that it’s the horror fans that really keep the genre going. That’s why it’s always refreshing to see scary movies show some appreciation towards the community, like that time Jason Voorhees was (rather brutally) defeated by a young monster movie enthusiast played by Corey Feldman, aka Tommy Jarvis.
In light of the 40th anniversary for both Jarvis and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, we’ve come up with a list celebrating six other badass horror fans in horror movies.

In light of the 40th anniversary for both Jarvis and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, we’ve come up with a list celebrating six other badass horror fans in horror movies.

Early next year, Universal and Blumhouse will continue their reanimation of the Universal Monsters with the release of director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Whannell, who also directed Insidious 3 and Upgrade for Blumhouse, was the man responsible for bringing The Invisible Man back to life in 2020. He did so with a modern twist on the character that turned out to be more than just a moderate success. The Invisible Man raked in $144 million on a $7 million budget, receiving mostly positive reviews.
With horror doing better than ever at the box office and Whannell arguably without a miss on his directing resume, hopes are high for Wolf Man, howling into theaters on January 17, 2025.
But this isn’t the first time a modern Wolf Man project sounded good on paper…
Listen to this pitch: A remake of the classic 1941 film, The Wolf Man, with Andrew Kevin Walker and David Self writing...

The '80s were a prominent decade in the horror genre and branching off from that are some of the best comedy horror films. The popular subgenre is often a hit or miss as some of the films lean too far into a campy, comedic tone, fully taking away from any effective thrills. Therefore, the best horror comedy films strike the right balance between the two genres and create an equally entertaining and spooky time.
Most comical, cheesy horror films are self-aware and make a deliberate effort to be a B-movie, but that's where they begin to differ from the best. Films like An American Werewolf in London are merely hoping to provide a few laughs with their frightening concepts. The best horror comedies range from classics like Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters to more underrated films such as Vampire's Kiss.

It's honestly almost impossible to imagine anyone besides Mads Mikkelsen portraying Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the cult NBC series "Hannibal," as the Danish actor fully embodies the show's version of the character. He is Hannibal Lecter, at least onscreen: a Machiavellian manipulator with an obscene wealth of knowledge, an impeccable sense of style, and a tendency toward eating people. His chemistry with his co-stars is undeniable, especially with Hugh Dancy, who plays empath and criminal profiler Will Graham. But back when NBC and series creator Bryan Fuller were first developing the show, they floated some very different actors before finally deciding on the magnificent Mikkelsen.
Fuller has revealed in interviews that he had to fight a bit to get Mikkelsen cast, because the network wanted someone "more mainstream" than the man mostly known to American audiences as the bloody-teared villain Le Chiffre from "Casino Royale." Thankfully he got his way...

K.C. Fox, an Emmy-nominated set decorator who worked on the sets of films like Speed, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, died August 28 of pancreatic cancer. The prolific artisan, whose career spanned four decades, was 70.
“Known for her joie de vivre, keen artistic eye, belly laugh, and clever wit, she was beloved by her crew and colleagues,” the Set Decorators Society of America wrote in an obituary on its website. “K.C. generously offered career advice, mentored through the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and served on many Boards and Committees at the Sdsa and AMPAS.”
A founding member of the Sdsa and 2024 recipient of the Earl Cooperman Lifetime Achievement Award, Fox died at home, surrounded by her family. Throughout her illustrious career, she racked up two Art Directors Guild Awards for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and HBO’s Little Britain USA.

Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.
