Several years have passed since 12-year-old Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman) fought off and killed mass murderer Jason Voorhees at Camp Crystal Lake. Now grown, Tommy (John Shepherd) is still fighting off nightmares and hallucinations about the experience. Having been moved from various mental institutions, he is newly assigned to Pinehurst, a rural halfway house for troubled teens. Suddenly, the murders begin again as another hockey-masked killer begins killing people at and around the halfway house.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is the fifth movie in the Friday the 13th series, preceded by Friday the 13th (1980) (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) (1981), Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982) (1982), and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) (1984) and followed by Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986) (1986), Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988) (1988), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) (1989), Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) (1993), Jason X (2001) (2001), and Freddy vs. Jason (2003) (2003). The storyline and screenplay for A New Beginning was written by Martin Kitrosser, David Cohen, and Danny Steinmann.

The old UK VHS misses out several scenes containing violence or nudity and has been cut for about 80 seconds, to have achieved a rating of 18 by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
