Ghulami

Edit
According to British Police archives, there was a dacoit in Rajasthan who always carried a copy of Maxim Gorky's book "Mother" with him.
Vinod Khanna was signed for the film in 1980. The cast was Vinod Khanna,Reena Roy, Smita Patil.Feroz Khan gave the mahurat shot. Vinod Khanna was later replaced by Dharmendra because of his retirement. The film was then restarted in 1984.
The character of the protagonist played by Dharamendra is an amalgamation of several Indian leaders like Sir Chhotu Ram who fought against the social and economic oppression of land tillers by money lenders and landowners in India.
Habib Nadiadwala lost his father during the making of the film and became financially broke. He gave J P Dutta 3 lakhs for the Rajasthan schedule. Due to the financial problem, Dharmendra agreed to work for free. Hearing this the rest of the cast all followed through doing the same.
It marked ace director, JP Dutta's directorial debut and his first collaboration with Legendary actor, Dharmendra. The director famously went on to repeat Dharmendra in his subsequent films forming a successful association in memorable films such as:- Hathyar 1989, Batwara 1989 featuring another favourite of JP Dutta Vinod Khanna, Yateem 1988 (Dharmendra as producer with his son, Sunny Deol in the lead) and then Kshatriya 1993 featuring another favourites Vinod Khanna and Sunny Deol.
