Kiss of the Spider Woman is a 1976 novel (El Beso de la Mujer Araña) by Argentinian writer Manuel Puig (1932-1990). Eight years later, 'Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Musical' opened on Broadway and won seven Tony Awards.
The title comes from a part in the book where Molina (William Hurt) asks Valentin (Raul Julia) for a kiss before he is paroled. Valentin asks Molina whether he's afraid that he'll turn into a panther woman (referring to a character in the 1942 movie Cat People (1942) who kills when she is kissed). Valentin says he is not the panther woman but the spider woman, hence Kiss of the Spider Woman.
