The statue itself underwent a renovation process that lasted about 2 years. At the time, the statue and it's structure had deteriorated over 98 years since it was first erected in 1886. The scaffolding was constructed in 1984 so that the exterior could be cleaned and other repairs could be made. The torch was removed to be reconstructed - if you watch carefully during the scene, you'll see the flame is missing. It was replaced with a newly built flame. The project, which also included restoring Ellis Island, was completed in 1986 for a 100 year re-dedication.
