Prior to Marcello Mastroianni, the role of Snàporaz was offered to Dustin Hoffman. He declined after he couldn't convince Federico Fellini to shoot the movie in direct sound rather than dubbing it afterwards. Hoffman feared dubbing himself would compromise his performance.
Actor Ettore Manni, who played Dr. Katzone, accidentally shot himself to death as his role was nearing completion.
In a 2020 interview with the Times, veteran Italian film journalist Gloria Satta recalled watching filming: "There were 50 naked women here, but because Fellini used incense to get a hazy light it felt like being in church. [He] would be flanked on set by a Jesuit priest and his psychoanalyst".
