Michael Jackson's biopic could face lengthy delays as it reportedly needs a major overhaul.'Michael' - which is being made with the cooperation of the late singer's family and stars his nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role - is said to have run into trouble with its third act because of its portrayal of the abuse allegations made by then-13-year-old Jordan Chandler, which saw the teenager testify that the 'Thriller' hitmaker had engaged in "sexual offensive contacts" before receiving a $23 million out-of-court settlement and Jackson not charged over the allegations. And according to Puck co-founder Matthew Belloni, the Jackson team allegedly signed an agreement prohibiting them from ever dramatising the Chandler family or their story, rendering "several key scenes" unusuable".The journalist suggested the movie's ending will have to be re-scripted and re-shot as much of the later plot “hinges specifically on the impact of the Chandler...

Documentaries and docuseries from three top streaming services took home honors at the duPont-Columbia Awards this week.
The Golden Globes and the Academy Awards may steal all the attention at this time of year, but they aren’t the only prestigious awards shows honoring media. The duPont-Columbia Awards, broadcast journalism’s equivalent to Pulitzer Prizes, were handed out on Wednesday, and there were some big names in streaming among the honorees. Max, Netflix, and Paramount+ all won awards, while some major traditional news outlets were conspicuously left off the list of winners.
Key Details: The duPont-Columbia Awards are handed out by the respected Columbia Journalism School. “Murder in Boston” by Max, “Birthing a Nation” by Paramount+, and “You Are Not Alone” by Netflix have all won awards. ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC all went home empty-handed. Sign Up $9.99+ / month max via prime video

Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck starring Tom Hiddleston is this year’s surprise winner of Toronto International Film Festival’s 2024 TIFF People’s Choice Award, a historically reliable bellwether of an Oscar nomination.

“The Life of Chuck,” director Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation starring Tom Hiddleston, has won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced at an awards ceremony on Sunday.
In TheWrap’s review of the film, Chase Hutchinson called it “less of a horror film than it is an existential grappling with the end — while also being a jubilant celebration of the moments that make life worth living along the way. It’s Flanagan’s vibrant equivalent of Charlie Kaufman’s ‘Synecdoche, New York’ that finds hope and meaning in his own way just as it is one of the best modern Stephen King adaptations one could hope for.”
Unlike festivals like Cannes, Berlin, Sundance and Venice, Toronto does not give out a jury award to the festival’s top film. Instead, viewers at all public screenings are invited to vote for their...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. The son of Joe and Katherine Jackson made his public singing debut as part of the Jackson 5 in 1964, joining his brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. By 1968 the group was signed to Motown and achieved worldwide success with Michael as the lead singer.
In 1971 Michael began his solo career with Motown and achieved instant success with hits like “Got to Be There,” “Rockin’ Robin” and “Ben.” By 1973, the success was dwindling and Michael’s songs weren’t charting like they used to. After taking some time to grow into a man (and an artist), Michael was signed to Epic Records and released the “Off the Wall” album in 1979. With five singles including the chart-toppers “Don’t Stop Til’ You Get Enough” and “Rock With You,” Michael had catapulted himself into a certified multi-platinum superstar.

Deadline has just unveiled that the Toronto International Film Festival has added twenty more titles to their schedule, which brings their lineup of official selections to a total of 278 films. One of the bigger titles to be added is Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which depicts the evening of October 11, 1975, when “a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. It is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.”
Another big feature that will be screened is the already-divisive but anticipated new film from Hollywood legend Francis Ford Coppola — Megalopolis. This will be the film’s North American premiere after its debut in Cannes already gave the movie the kind of buzz that people had expected to come from a mind as mad as Coppola’s. The film would...

And the films just keeping on coming as the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has announced 20 movies to its official selection, taking its count to 278 titles.
Chief among them is Jason Reitman’s SNL opening-night pic Saturday Night, from Sony which will get its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s homeland. With that deduction, this must mean Saturday Night is going to Telluride.
And you thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago? Well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The pic also stars Diego Calva. The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Doctor Who season 14's retcon of a Peter Davison-era monster enhances a 42-year-old story with a new twist on powerful enemies. The Mara, originally a pure evil snake, is now a member of the Pantheon of godlike beings, explained by Sutekh in season 14. Linking the Mara to the Pantheon offers a deeper layer to its character and allows for potential future appearances in the series.
Doctor Who season 14's retcon of a Peter Davison-era monster vastly improved a 42-year-old story. Every actor who played Doctor Who has faced off against various powerful creatures who want to destroy the universe, many of whom have a hatred for Earth and human beings. The classic series featured both recurring villains such as the Daleks and monsters that appeared once or twice before being vanquished, seemingly forever. Some of the one-off stories are among the best Doctor Who episodes of all time, though...

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in July, and others were chosen at random.

This review of “Dear Evan Hansen” was first published after the film’s September 9, 2021, premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Is there something about getting through 2020 and the first eight months of 2021 that makes people want to sing and dance? You’d think so from the movies, which this year will include Steven Spielberg’s new version of “West Side Story,” Leos Carax’s wacko Sparks musical “Annette,” Christopher Ashley’s version of “Come From Away,” Jon Chu’s version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights,” Miranda’s version of Jonathan Larson’s “tick, tick … Boom!” and Stephen Chbosky’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” which opened the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

Norah Jones and Mavis Staples have teamed for a new bittersweet ballad, “I’ll Be Gone.”
Written by Pete Remm, who co-produced the song with Jones, “I’ll Be Gone” is a slow and steady soul tune with a gospel edge befitting the song’s lyrics, which convey a potent mixture of grief, perseverance, struggle and absolution. “There’s a place far from here,” Jones and Staples sing together, “Gonna make it my home/It’s where I belong/When I get where I’m going, I’ll be gone/I’ll be gone.

In her Seventies, gospel-r&B legend Mavis Staples has emerged as perhaps the hardest working singer of her generation, releasing more albums of original material over the past decade (five, and counting) than even her famously prolific contemporary Willie Nelson. Beginning with the rebirth of 2010’s You Are Not Alone, Staples has cycled through a series of taste-making producers (Jeff Tweedy, M Ward), and a host of younger songwriters to create material that fits her prophetic voice.

Nearing the end of her all-star 80th birthday concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Wednesday, Mavis Staples stopped to express her joy to the crowd.
“You can’t do nothing with me,” she said, between sips of hot tea. “I’m just above the clouds.”
Thankfully, she’d brought everyone in the house along with her, making it a perfect setup for her performance of the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There.” The 1972 Stax Records funk burner hasn’t lost an ounce of its relevance, with the lines...

Halfway through her star-studded 80th-birthday concert at New York’s Apollo Theater, Mavis Staples paused her half-century-plus–spanning set to take in her adoring crowd. “I’m too excited to talk!” she cried out from the Apollo stage, 63 years after first appearing at the theater as a teenager with her family band, the Staple Singers, in 1956.

In the decade since Michael Jackson’s death, the late singer’s estate has turned what had been a financial disaster into one of entertainment’s most lucrative properties. But now, the upcoming documentary “Leaving Neverland” threatens to upend all of that — and the estate is in full-blown damage control mode.
Directed by Dan Reed, “Leaving Neverland” was a sensation at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it was met with a standing ovation. HBO, which produced the doc with Channel 4, will air the two-part, four-hour film on Sunday, March 3, and Monday, March 4.
The doc centers on two accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, now in their 30s, who recount in graphic detail how they were sexually abused by Jackson starting at very young ages. “The sexual activities are described with unnerving candor, and one’s inevitable response is to recoil in horror at Michael Jackson’s predatory sickness,...

The Jan. 3 debut of the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” dealt a swift blow to R. Kelly’s career. One week after the premiere of the incendiary exposé covering longstanding sexual abuse allegations against him and uncovering new ones, Lady Gaga cemented his persona non grata status by joining Team #MuteRKelly.
Gaga apologized for working with him and vowed to remove their 2013 duet “Do What U Want” from streaming services, a move Celine Dion also made four days later with “I’m Your Angel,” her 1998 collaboration with Kelly. So what do we do now with arguably the biggest R. Kelly superstar summit of all: “You Are Not Alone,” the 1995 number-one single he wrote and co-produced for Michael Jackson?
The “Thriller” icon, who died in 2009 at age 50, could be on the verge of becoming the next cancelled superstar of 2019 following the Sundance premiere of another legacy-mangling documentary/exposé about a music legend.

“Just because I can’t describe it,” Jeff Tweedy sings halfway through Warm, “doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try.” On his first formal solo album of new songs (and second non-Wilco project in the last few years), Tweedy — never one to take a year off from songwriting — plunges far into his own fears, thoughts and anxieties. The result is a probing collection of understated indie-folk.
Tweedy takes a laid-back, contented singer-songwriter approach not dissimilar to the down-tempo mood of Wilco’s most recent offering, Schmilco. As the title suggests,...

In an effort to raise public awareness of the 1999 premature birth of her son, Jazz, and the support she received from March Of Dimes, Grammy-nominated recording artist Maysa is releasing a powerfully honest and intimate single, You Are Not Alone, in conjunction with Prematurity Awareness Month (November).
Maysa's song — and Prematurity Awareness Month — serve as a rally cry and tribute to the 15 million babies worldwide who are born prematurely each year and the people who care for them. Premature birth and its complications are the largest contributor to infant death in the U.S. and around the globe. Babies who survive early birth often face serious and lifelong health problems.
“I remember how difficult it was to give birth to a preemie, especially in a foreign country, and how alone one feels in that situation,” says Maysa. “The lyrics and melody came to me in minutes once the emotions from...

Donald Glover’s musical alter ego has pulled off a neat trick: Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart after he performed it on Saturday Night Live on May 5.
RCA Records said the video for the track has been viewed more than 110 million times in its first nine days — and was YouTube’s most-watch clip on each of those. Watch the video below; it’s directed by Glover’s Atlanta director Hiro Murai.
Internationally, the track holds at No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Chart and U.S. Chart and also topped iTunes in 45 markets — and was Top 5 in 63 markets.
Only 30 other songs have bowed atop the chart in its 60-year history, from Michael Jackson’s “You Are Not Alone” in 1995 to a pair of Drake singles this year.
The No. 1 is Glover/Gambino’s first on the U.S. album or singles chart.

Megan took the plunge on The Arrangement Season 2 Episode 5 when she decided to meet with Zach's friends who seem to be on her same wavelength.
Gabe and Gail are still members of Ihm, but they don't like Terence and want to bring him down, just like Megan.
But can they be trusted?
It was reassuring that Gail was as suspicious of Megan as Megan was of them. It's a tricky business, but Gabe was right when he said they have to stop living in fear.
It still could be an elaborate setup by Terence to see what's up Megan's sleeve, but at this point, Gail and Gabe seem to be telling the truth. They are as disgusted with Terence as Megan.
Megan is tired of Terence controlling Kyle's life. Kyle is probably tired of Terence controlling his life, but he doesn't know how to get out from under Terence's thumb.
