Was the first Hong Kong film to shoot in Mainland China since the start of China's "reform and opening-up" following up Zedong Mao's death in 1976. This was aided by the fact that the production company Feng Huang Motion Pictures had leftist leanings.
Feature film directorial debut for Johnnie To after some television work as well as the acting debut for Cherie Chung who had been 3rd runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong competition the year before. Both went on to become major figures in the Hong Kong film industry.
