In the DVD commentary for the film, Ken Loach states that the shooting of the fox is real: the animal was killed for the film.
The film was made by ATV, which broadcast in the English Midlands, but the dialect used in the film is from slightly further north. Some in the ATV region were completely unfamiliar with the dialect used.
