Barbara Leigh's last role. She had been cast as the main character in Hammer Studios' planned adaptation of the comic heroine Vampirella in 1976 and put other projects on hold to do it because she felt it would lead to bigger roles. Hammer kept delaying the film several times, and finally cancelled it. Frustrated by that and the lack of decent offers, she quit acting. She continued to model and other projects. In 1997, she went to work as the "Photo Project Coordinator" for Playboy until she retired in 2014.
Producers were angry at Barbara Leigh for not showing up to record the looping after filming ended. According to Leigh, they kept changing the recording date. She wanted to fly to Spain to see her husband Joe Lewis, who was making a movie, but they kept stalling. She booked her flight to Spain, and they finally set a date. The tickets were non-refundable, so she left the country. They had to hire another actress to dub her lines.
Larry Buchanan admitted in a 1993 Filmfax interview that the film was 'cheap.' The film's Kenya settings are in fact Malibu State Park.
The lead character Susan never walked around topless like depicted on the movie poster.
