The film's story-line necessitated the creation of a Dinner Key Ferry, which the three heroes hijack. The art department complied, renting an old ferry, rigging it up, and building an entrance in the Dinner Key Marina, through which cars could pass. The entire operation was realistic-looking enough that a local newspaper sent a photographer down to shoot a story on the new ferry slated for service in Miami.

Local residents were attracted by the sight of film crews, but certain days drew larger crowds than normal. One of them was the day Robert Klein, attired in full drag, topped off with a handbag and hat, stormed out of a taxicab and into a restaurant. Among the on-lookers were his parents, who had retired several years ago to a condominium in Fort Lauderdale. As her son flounced out of the cab and swung his purse threateningly at the driver, Mrs. Klein shook her head and murmured, "Where did I go wrong?" proving that Robert is not the only comic in the family.

Gabe Kaplan was at the time known mostly from his role starring as schoolteacher Gabe Kotter in the hit television series Welcome Back, Kotter (1975), which also featured John Travolta.
