Shot in 1938, finished in 2019, Richard Lyford's As The Earth Turns is a standout piece of science fiction from the Silent Age. Lyford was just 20 years old when he made it, and although his confident work with the actors recalls his stage experience, much of what we see elsewhere is sheer invention. It may not look polished - indeed, producer/composer Edmund Hartman, who pieced it back together after it was found by one of Lyford's descendants - elected to refrain from restoring it further so that viewers could appraise the director's work in its raw form - but it is brilliant in what it manages to achieve with the simple tools of the time.
The late Thirties were a pivotal time in the development of cinema. Gone With The Wind was shot at the same time - not just a talkie, but in colour - and the two seem.

We just took a DNA test and it turns out we're 100 percent green with envy over Lizzo's look. The "Truth Hurts" singer took to her Instagram to give her followers a first look at her outfit for the 2021 Grammy Awards on Sunday night. "On my way to the function ya'll," Lizzo casually captioned the glam pic, which showed off her seafoam green Balmain dress. But the real Mvp of her 'fit? The serious bling she was sporting as Lizzo was dripping in Bulgari diamonds. The 32-year-old finished off her look with matching Stuart Weitzman custom-crystalized Olive heels. Yes, even her feet were covered in jewels and, basically, the entire look is "Good As Hell" and has us counting down the...

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono were among those remembering the great John Lennon on the 40th anniversary of his tragic death. “A sad sad day,” wrote McCartney, Lennon’s songwriting partner, friend and often artistic rival, “but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world.”
“I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser!,” McCartney concludes, with a reference to the nickname for folks from Liverpool.
Lennon was shot dead on Dec. 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman, who remains in custody after repeated requests for parole.
Starr, the only surviving Beatle besides McCartney (George Harrison died in 2001), tweeted today, “Tuesday, 8 December 1980 we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John. I’m asking Every music radio station in the world sometime today play Strawberry Fields Forever. Peace and love.”

The list of things we wanted this year and did not get is too long and, frankly, despair-inducing to run down, so for the purposes of this article I’ll localize to “World of Wong Kar-wai,” a traveling retrospective of new restorations that was to begin this summer at New York’s Film at Lincoln Center. And then, etc., which has led to a reduced version: the same films, but on whatever home screen you can manage rather than a theater; the same restorations, but victim to compression, Internet connection; no opportunities to make eyes at a beautiful stranger in the lobby afterwards before you both go your separate ways, wondering what may have been.
Janus Films march on all the same, their series commencing with November 25’s virtual opening of In the Mood for Love at Film at Lincoln Center. Marking the occasion is a new trailer that does...

With yet another Friday the 13th upon us, it’s high time to dig into a now fairly-outmoded Hollywood practice, the synergistic soundtrack album, as it pertains to Camp Blood’s least favorite son. Today, we celebrate the Friday The 13th franchise by making a playlist of its top soundtrack slices.
As a series, Friday The 13th has run the musical gamut, kicking off at the tail end of disco (as the opening theme music of Friday The 13th Part III can attest), peaking during the hair metal ’80s, and then quite thoroughly exploring a renaissance in metal at the start of the 21st century.
Is this list solely a product of the personal taste of this horror and metal fan? Of course. As such, you’ll notice that Hot Ice does not make the cut. Several of the top entries in this list did not even occupy any pre-end credits screen time,...

Scottish instrumental post-rockers Mogwai have announced their new album As the Love Continues by dropping the video for the LP’s first single “Dry Fantasy.”

One of the few A-list stars to emerge the last few years, it’s surprising it has taken this long for a film starring Margot Robbie to finally arrive, but her Dust Bowl drama Dreamland will now be landing next month. The 66-year-old's lifeless body was discovered in the early hours of Sunday by her husband, Thierry Funk Brentano.

Berlin has become the epicenter of Europe's vibrant street art scene since the reunification of Germany in 1989. And it's no wonder why artists are drawn here -- with cheap rent, urban decay that inspires and serves as a canvas and fairly lax laws regarding these public spaces, Berlin has allowed artists to explore in a medium that is accessible and espouses anti-capitalist and activist sentiments.
French artist Mto makes movie icons into larger than life street-art symbols -- set on the crumbling backdrop of Berlin's city streets.
