The biggest problem with Pandemic Cinema — an emergent sub-genre largely defined by well-meaning dramas in which famous actors and/or opportunistic up-and-comers struggle with Zoom calls, sterilize their groceries, and otherwise memorialize the morbid tedium of the last 18 months — is that these movies are so hellbent on making us feel seen that they don’t have much to show us in return. Star-studded films such as “Locked Down” and “Together” and festival indies like “The End of Us” all strive to consecrate the surreality of love during the time of Covid, but they’re invariably overwhelmed by the sheer weight of their signifiers. Distanced learning, virtual family meetings, banging pots and pans in support of essential workers at 7 p.m… Representation is one of the most powerful gifts that art can provide; self-recognition is something you can get for free from the bathroom mirror.
And then there’s the fact...
And then there’s the fact...

Alan Alda will be awarded the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award.
The festival established the award in 2017, honoring Cavett himself. The Hiff, now in its 26th year, opens Oct. 4 with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Kindergarten Teacher” and closes Oct. 8.
“Alan Alda is one of those now rare actors who in his career continues to distinguish himself on Broadway, in films and on television,” said Hiff co-chairman Alec Baldwin. “Of course, most people remember Alda for his starring role in the seminal TV series ‘M*A*S*H,’ but Alda is also great in the movies and on stage.”
Alda has won seven Emmys and wrote many of the episodes on “M*A*S*H.” He appeared in continuing roles on “ER,” “The West Wing,” “30 Rock,” “The Blacklist,” “The Big C,” “Horace and Pete,” and “The Good Fight.” He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role...

Artist and activist Ai Weiwei is particularly busy at the moment. He’s about to launch “Good Fences Make Good Neighbors,” an art installation in New York, and if that’s not enough, his latest documentary “Human Flow” is gearing up to open this week. The film, which chronicles the global refugee crisis, couldn’t be more timely, and it was important for Ai that his picture was informative as well as intimate.

Last fall, for the first time in 14 years, Patrick Hardison was just another face in the crowd.
“The day I got out of the hospital, I needed a few things, so I went to Macy’s,” Hardison, 42, tells People exclusively. “I could tell the difference right then. Nobody was staring, nobody was saying anything. I was just there.”
It may sound like an everyday errand run, but for Hardison, that shopping trip in October 2015 was the moment he began to reclaim his life. Having lived with a disfigured visage since he suffered severe burns in a 2001 accident, the volunteer firefighter...

In 1979, Don Coscarelli was 23 years old when he made a haunting, off-beat tale of two brothers facing off against an inter-dimensional threat known as The Tall Man, who Angus Scrimm (Coscarelli’s best friend) played with psychopathic intensity. “Phantasm” became a cult phenomenon, spawning four sequels; the purported finale, “Phantasm: Ravager” (Well Go USA), opens this week. But Scrimm’s no longer around to help promote it, and Coscarelli’s left on his own to contemplate a rocky career.
Whether or not it’s truly the last, “Ravager” does mark Scrimm’s final performance. The actor died in January at the age of 89, not long after production wrapped. When “Phantasm: Ravager” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, alongside a new 4k restoration of the original film (aided by Jj Abrams’ production studio, Bad Robot), the screenings had the air of a wake.

And now his watch has ended. Rip, Shaggydog.
In "Game of Thrones" Season 6, Episode 3, "Oathbreaker," Jon Snow quit the post he took an oath to keep for life, saying his watch as Lord Commander had ended. Because Jon Snow is dead. So who is he now? It's a loaded question. It's a very important question. And it's a question that only just started to be addressed in this big bad tease of an episode.
Jon kept the job just long enough to see the people who stabbed him to death be hanged to death, with little hope of being resurrected. (Pause for an unpopular opinion: Olly was a traitor for helping to kill Jon, but the wildlings killed his entire family and it's understandable that he felt betrayed by Jon supporting them. Olly, I get you. Everyone else can go ahead and get mad.)

Please tell us Quinn got the code wrong. Please. We're only two weeks into the fifth season of Homeland, and there has already been a hit put out on poor Carrie Mathison. Things had finally become relatively stable for Carrie (Claire Danes): A new life with baby Frannie in Germany, a job in the private sector, and a hunky German boyfriend. We weren't foolish to believe it would last for too long. But Saul (Mandy Patinkin) making her the next target on Quinn's (Rupert Friend) hit list? That we never saw coming. But there it was in tonight's final moments: Quinn's shaky handwriting spelling out M-a-t-h-i-s-o before what he was actually writing finally sunk in. Yep, someone at the CIA wants...

The Valiant #4 came out this week from Valiant comics and it’s about beginning and endings, life and death, mortality and eternity. Not of the miniseries, nor a story arc, but for the Valiant universe. Even more, it felt like a message written to me, a long time fan, within this completely mainstreet hyper-dramatic action horror thriller. It was a countdown to a valiant zero hour. For the line and me.

French provocateur Philippe Grandrieux may not be an auteur to everyone’s liking, but since debuting with 1998’s visceral Somber, his cinema has always been a point of contention, and he’s since cultivated a growing cult following that includes names like Marilyn Manson. His most infamous work is the Anna Mougalalis headlined A New Life (2002), which is difficult to find copies of. Since then, titles like 2008’s Un Lac (which is available streaming via boutique site Vyer Films) and 2012’s White Epilepsy have waned in peripheral conversations following their limited festival play. But we are excited to see that Grandrieux wrapped a new project in November, Malgré la nuit (Despite the Night), which should receive a more renowned reception as it’s headlined by Ariane Labed, one of the prominent faces from the Greek Weird Wave (Attenberg; Alps), and one...

From the first moments of Goodbye to All That, when Otto Wall (Paul Schneider) is jogging past vibrant autumn foliage to the strains of a Haydn piano concerto, Angus MacLachlan's directorial debut feels like a 1980s Alan Alda dramedy (The Four Seasons, A New Life). Otto is a comfortably oblivious white-collar suburban dad who's unaware that tween daughter Edie (Audrey Scott) worries about his safety — or that his wife, Annie (Melanie Lynskey), is filing divorce papers. "Why do these things always happen to Daddy?" Edie asks after an Atv accident hobbles the marathon runner. "He doesn't pay attention," answers the weary Annie, and that's as insightful as MacLachlan's script gets. Otto's inattention is manifested in clumsiness and bad luck. Oth...

After a crazy Hart of Dixie Season 2 finale, we're back in the town of Bluebell for "Who Says You Can't Go Home?."
Zoe struggled to hang onto New York with her deep love of the little town of Bluebell, all the while, trying to win over the community once again. You know what, this episode reminded me of the old Dixie before all of the heartbreak. It was very enjoyable.
First off, Joel? Who the hell is Joel? Why is he here? Am I suppose to care about him? A new life, in five months? Well, at least he's cute. Unfortunately, he doesn't stand a chance with Zoe Hart. He obviously doesn't know the truth about Wade, which will be a big blowout.
Seriously, is anyone else shocked that she lied to her new boyfriend? Yeah, not me.
Elsewhere, Rose made an appearance! I love her! I am so glad she showed up!

Tribeca Film today announced they they're acquiring U.S. rights to Marion Vernoux's "Bright Days Ahead" ahead of its North American premiere tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, based on Fanny Chesnel's novel "A Young Girl with Gray Hair" and starring the iconic Fanny Ardant, was released in France earlier this year. Here's the synopsis, per Tribeca: In "Bright Days Ahead" Caroline (Fanny Ardant) has retired, at last. A new life lies before her: time to take care of her children, of her husband, and -- above all -- herself. She soon comes to realize that this new freedom is synonymous with boredom and idleness. Especially when she receives a membership to her neighborhood’s senior club as a birthday present. Reluctant at first, she decides to take the plunge. Set in Buenos Aires and the bleak, exotic Tigre delta area 20 miles to the north, Ana Piterbarg's slow, sombre noir thriller explores the familiar theme of dual identity that's been with us in comic, romantic and tragic forms since Shakespeare's tales of separated twins, Twelfth Night and The Comedy of Errors. Probably the most memorable recent instance is Antonioni's last great movie, The Passenger, in which Jack Nicholson, as a TV reporter at the end of his tether, takes over the identity of a near double who's died in the next room in a Saharan hotel, only to discover the stranger is an arms dealer in trouble with guerrillas.

"Life" begins as a sparse, acoustic ditty that's less bombastic than much of Mmj's output, and recalls his fascination with George Harrison at his most stripped-down (he paid tribe to the former Beatle on a 2009 covers Ep). James' haunting voice,...

It wasn’t long ago that Matt Marquissee approached me expressing interest in contributing to our small publication. He was a freelance web developer with a Masters in Computer Science and had an unquestionable love for science fiction, mythology, and the art of storytelling – How could I say no?
Sound On Sight has continued to rapidly grow in a short four years and only continues to exist because of the hard work of such contributors as Matt. In that brief time I’ve had the privilege of befriending a wide range of individuals from around the world, all of whom share one common bond – our love and obsession of cinema. So how does one react when hearing the news that a fellow Sound On Sight family member has passed away? We do what we do best. We quote a movie – in this case two – one for us and the second for Matt,...

Score Produced and Performed by: Brett Smith
Release Date: May 22, 2012
Format: Audio CD
Number of Discs: 1 (approx. 1 hour)
Label: Lakeshore Records
From Inside – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features original music by Brett Smith (the band Caul). Based on the epic graphic novel by John Bergin, From Inside is the story of Cee, a young pregnant woman who finds herself on a damaged train slowly transcribing its way across a bleak post-apocalyptic landscape. Flood, war, starvation and a plague of death threaten the train’s passengers. Cee struggles through these dangers while coping with the memory of her lost husband and the imminent birth of her child.
A post-apocalyptic landscape needs a dark score. Composer Brett Smith found this a particular challenge. He said, “I had to somehow convey the weight of the world, misery and despair that Cee had never been exposed to.”
One such scene is when Cee walks through the packed train,...

The Cannes Film Festival is just two weeks away and excitement continues to grow, and as filmmakers, producers, directors, actors and sales agents pack their bags, more peeks of the films hitting the Croisette are landing online. The latest comes from two Canadian filmmakers who will both be competing in the Un Certain Regard section.
First up is two more snaps from Brandon Cronenberg's feature film debut "Antiviral." Starring Caleb Landry Jones ("X-Men: First Class"), the film follows a salesman for a clinic that replicates celebrity diseases for public consumption, who himself becomes obsessed with a celebrity and injects himself with her disease, then must figure out how to cure it before time runs out. So yes, a perfectly Cronenberg-esque tale. Sarah Gadon, Douglas Smith, Matt Watts, James Cade and Malcolm McDowell round out the cast with Brandon representing the younger half of the Cronenberg team heading to France...

Update: English subtitled trailer has arrived. Watch below.
Quebecois filmmaker Xavier Dolan is back this year with "Laurence Anyways," and while some have criticized his films for putting style before substance (this writer disagrees), there is no denying it is tremendously exciting to see such a young director go balls out, with carefully crafted, deeply evocative images. And this lengthy, three-minute trailer for his new film (French only, sorry) shows that once again, he's going to be putting some utterly gorgeous imagery up on screen.
Starring Melvil Poupad, Nathalie Baye, Suzanne Clement and Monia Chokri, his latest is set in 1989 (the year Dolan was born; note the garish set and costume design), and centers on Laurence (Poupaud), who reveals on his 30th birthday his secret desire to become a woman. His girlfriend is shocked, but agrees to stay by his side, and the next year Laurence goes back to working...

While only "Moonrise Kingdom" is confirmed so far for the Cannes Film Festival, bits and pieces of other films likely headed to the Croisette are beginning to appear. This morning came word that both David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" and Jacques Audiard's "Rust And Bone" received May release dates in France, right in the midst of the fest and now, another film we pegged as a strong contender to makes Cannes has peeked around the corner.
The folks over at IonCinema have dug up the first images from Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways." The young Canadian director is already a fave of the French set with “J'ai Tue Ma Mere” becoming a sensation of the Director’s Fortnight, and “Les amours imaginaires” (“Heartbeats”) playing Un Certain Regard in 2010, but his latest finds him sitting firmly in the director's chair without taking a starring role. Instead, Melvil Poupad, Nathalie Baye, Suzanne...

As we begin to prep our 2012 Cannes predictions list (scheduled for next week), we've come across some stills for Xavier Dolan's Laurence Anyways. His third film, will likely be a strong contender for a showing at a festival where he got to showcase his first pair of films (J'ai tue ma mere, Les Amours imaginaires). Below we find the film's principle player Melvil Poupaud in various states of what appears to be a mental, emotional and physical metamorphosis along with Suzanne Clément (who played a supporting character role of a teacher in I Killed My Mother), French thesp Nathalie Baye and the final pic of the batch is Dolan working behind the camera - unlike his previous works, he won't be appearing in this one. Here's the synopsis: In 1989, Laurence (Poupaud) celebrates its 30th anniversary at the restaurant with Fred (Suzanne Clément), his girlfriend. When he reveals his secret desire of becoming a woman,...

When it debuted back in 2010, Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to his smash play The Phantom of the Opera, was a bust. Now he hopes it can be resurrected.
The composer helped rework the musical for a stage production currently running in Australia at Sydney's Capitol Theatre for 12 weeks only (get tickets here), but if you're like most of us and can't make it Down Under, you'll have a chance to see it when a filmed version hits movie theaters this month and next.
Lloyd Webber hopes the movie — available at hundreds of cinemas across the U.S. on February 28th and March 7th — will spark new interest, maybe from Broadway. A new life for Love Never Dies would be a vindication for Lloyd Webber, who considers it to be his best score but was distracted by battling cancer when it opened in London in 2010.

An Mmo review is a strange beast. Not only does the sheer magnitude of such games make them tough to assess in a traditional way, but often the whole system of gameplay favours long term rewards over the immediacy of fast-paced thrills. In this and other ways, they often manage to dodge traditional criticism; they’re expected to be buggy on release, the combat is never going to be as fun as a shooter, the narrative is unlikely to be as arresting as a traditional RPG and they’re likely to change dramatically several years down the line.
At the same time, you’re also reviewing what is essentially a social tool for a lot of people. In the age of transparency on the Internet, where our identity is scattered over various console accounts and social networking websites but can all be linked to one person,...

It hasn't been an easy holiday season for reality show star Vienna Girardi. After flaunting their relationship on "Bachelor Pad 2," Girardi split from boyfriend Kasey Kahl in November and reportedly moved back to the peanut farm her parents own in Geneva, Florida.
A new life change, right? Not so fast: the serial reality show contestant, who first shot to fame last year when she became engaged to Jake Pavelka on "The Bachelor" -- left the farm shortly thereafter to film "Relationship Rehab" with said ex-boyfriend Kahl. (It appears the two patched things up).
Now TMZ reports that the 25-year-old Girardi has angrily stormed off set, telling producers that she "hates" them, because the producers ushered in yet another ex-boyfriend: Lee Smith, with whom Girardi was allegedly flirting with while engaged to "Pavelka."
