In 2014, Billboard started considering multiple metrics of music success, including online streams and individual track sales, in addition to the traditional album sales that previously made up the entirety of the Billboard 200's chart determinations. An album sale currently counts as one album unit. Sales of 10 individual tracks also counts as one unit. But an artist needs 3,750 ad-supported streams or 1,250 paid subscription streams to equal one unit. Then in 2020 Billboard began counting music videos on platforms like YouTube.

Luminate’s 2025 midyear report has arrived, and it has some surprising data: Rock is back.

According to the report, rock came in second in the top U.S. core genre, ranked by on-demand audio streaming. It sits with 123.3 billion, behind hip-hop and R&b at 171.1 billion. But that’s not all: Rock experienced the highest growth compared to the same timeframe as 2024, with Latin, country, and Christian/gospel following. The Sinners soundtrack — and the adjacent activity of featured artists — caused a spike in the blues.

Sza’s Sos, which has enjoyed a significant boost since she released her deluxe Lana reissue of the album at the end of last year, was the second-biggest album in the U.S. at the midyear with about 1.711 million equivalent units. Kendrick Lamar’s Gnx came in third with just over 1.7 million, Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos took fourth with 1.65 million, and Sabrina Carpenter’s 2024 Short n’ Sweet rounded out the Top Five with over 1.3 million.

According to Billboard, consumption on Reputation rose 221 percent, with the album earning 42,000 album equivalent units this past week. She sold 15,000 albums, and the album also had about 34.75 million streams.

Reputation wasn’t the only one of Swift’s old records seeing a bump after she dropped the news of the acquisition: As The Hollywood Reporter reported last week, Spotify streams for Speak Now rose 430 percent the day after the sale, while Taylor Swift streams jumped 220 percent. Angelenos were treated to a rare performance from Justin Bieber, as the two-time Grammy winner took the stage at Sza and Kendrick Lamar’s Grand National Tour yesterday. In its second night at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, the “Peaches” singer surprised audiences as he and the One of Them Days star duetted “Snooze,” off of the latter’s Sos album.

The duo effortlessly played off one another as they took turns singing the chorus of the sleeper hit toxic love-themed track, dancing and vibing as Sza threw out an effortless falsetto. The five-time Grammy-winning “Consideration” singer was seen cupping Bieber’s chin, as he then kissed her palm and hand, eventually twirling around as they moved across the stage. As the crowd continued going wild, the two wrapped up the brief performance before disappearing underneath the stage.

As she performed on Friday night (May 23) at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Justin, 31, surprised fans by coming out and performing a duet with Sza.

The day after Anora nearly swept the Oscars, the Disney-owned streaming service Hulu announced that the Brooklyn-set comedy will start streaming on Monday, March 17. It will join another Cannes Film Festival winner-turned-Oscar winner, Parasite, on the platform.
