This film's plot is based on the 1986 Newtown, Connecticut murder of Helle Crafts by her husband Richard Crafts, in which she was beaten to death and placed in a freezer until he chopped up her body in a woodchipper. This same crime would later inspire Joel and Ethan Coen to create the film "Fargo" in 1996.
According to an interview with Jon McBride on the DVD, the film's final budget was $400, not including the cost of the camera.
Jon McBride wrote, directed, edited, composed, and acted in "Woodchipper Massacre." The film took two months to completely shoot. It was finished in 1988.
The woodchipper in the movie was only rented for one weekend, so all the shots with it had to be done before the Monday it was due to be returned.
