Lou Christie, the singer-songwriter who reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 with the lush “Lightnin’ Strikes” and had another top 20 hit that year with the (for its time) sexually explicit “Rhapsody in the Rain,” died Wednesday. He was 82.
Christie died at his home in his native Pittsburgh after a short illness, his wife, Francesca, told The Hollywood Reporter.
With his signature falsetto, Christie broke out with two songs in 1963 that he penned with longtime collaborator Twyla Herbert — “The Gypsy Cried” and “Two Faces Have I” — and he made it into the top 10 again with “I’m Gonna Make You Mine” in 1969.
“Lightnin’ Strikes,” arranged, conducted and produced by Charles Calello and featuring backing vocals from Bernadette Carroll, Peggy Santiglia and Denise Ferri of The Delicates, was released on MGM Records in December 1965 and made it to No. 1 two months later on Christie’s 23rd birthday.

This week Neil Young did two amazing club shows at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, with his new band the Chrome Hearts. He began both nights with “I’m the Ocean,” one of his fiercest songs, from the 1995 Pearl Jam collaboration Mirror Ball. “People my age, they don’t do the things I do” — that was a great line when he was on the edge of turning 50, but it’s a whole other experience hearing him snarl it now at 78. On Monday night he sang that verse twice,...

Two days after making their debut at Farm Aid, Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts played their first headlining show Monday night at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The 14-song set mixed gentle acoustic songs (“Come a Time,” “Journey Through the Past”) with wild, Crazy Horse-style electric numbers (“Big Time,” “Powderfinger,” “I’m the Ocean”) heavy on jams.
The highlight was an epic “Down by the River” that spanned 13 minutes, featuring extended guitar interplay between Young and Micah Nelson. The band also featured organist Spooner Oldham, drummer Anthony LoGerfo,...

As an Arsenal fan, I almost feel like a traitor for simply watching this documentary. But I do love a good documentary on almost any subject, football ones even more so. There’s been a lot of good Arsenal documentaries too, from 89 to ‘Invincible’ to Rocky and Wrighty: From Brockley to the Big Time, I’ve seen and enjoyed plenty. There’s also an incredible amount of documentaries on the top stars of the game – Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Gazza, the list goes on – so it’s good to see a film on – for want of a better term – a slightly less ‘big time’ player.
That might sound a little harsh on Jermaine Defoe, who has played for many years in the Premier League and in the World Cup for England. He is no doubt a high-profile footballer.

The concept behind Peter Gabriel’s first album of original material in 21 years, i/o, feels strikingly contemporary. Over the last year, the veteran singer-songwriter has dropped a new song each month, touring arenas leading up to the album’s release. With each song being made available in a “Bright-Side” mix, “Dark-Side” mix, and a third Dolby Atmos “In-Side” mix, i/o effectively allows listeners to pick their favorites among the different versions and create their own playlist.
While the bones of the songs are taken from the exact same performances, the mixes feature major differences in their musical emphasis. For one, the “Bright Side” mix of “Panopticom” puts acoustic guitar at the forefront, while the instrument is barely heard in the “Dark Side Mix.” The former delivers a more potent version of the song, leaning into Gabriel’s penchant for grand statements, with sweeping, warm strings and piano.

Mia Sara, known for her iconic role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, has been mostly retired from acting and focusing on her passion for writing as a poet. Sara has expressed that her time working on Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Legend was not enjoyable, and she does not look back on those roles fondly. Mia Sara is making a comeback to the big screen in the upcoming Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck, directed by Mike Flanagan and featuring a star-studded cast.

Where will “Avatar: The Way Of Water” end up on the highest-grossing movie of all time list? It currently sits at #4 with a 2.13 billion total gross, just shy of “Titanic” at 2.19 billion. Looking ahead, “Water” overtaking “Titanic” (no pun intended) feels inevitable. But looking further than that, where will the upcoming “Avatar” sequels land on that all-time list when they hit theaters in 2024, 2026, and 2028?

Everyone knows that with all of the rampant campaigning going on, Hollywood’s Oscar season can get quite political, but this year it’s literally poliitics. And not as usual. An infusion of real politicians, and political issues, have been characterizing this Academy campaign season for several weeks and it seems to be ramping up to new heights just as ballots went out this week and voting is now going on in earnest through February 19. Of course real-world politics have often seeped into Oscar season but, whether it is the political nature of the films or some other reason, it’s careening out of control.
