The film never had a theatrical release in the USA despite having an American lead co-star (Charlie Schlatter) from that country.
Producer Joseph Janni and director John Schlesinger had earlier tried to make a film adaptation of the source novel 'The Delinquents' (1962) in 1963 which was only the following year after the book had been first published.
The later Kylie Minogue music video 'Tears on My Pillow' (1990) is inter-cut with film clips from this movie.
Charlie Schlatter allegedly replaced Ben Mendelsohn as Brownie. The Australian actor was supposedly signed to appear, then replaced when it was realised an international star would boost sales. He and Kylie Minogue had worked together since the mid-'80s on TV shows such as The Henderson Kids (1985) and Neighbours (1985), and later reunited on Sample People (2000).
