Some of the sex scenes in the film are unsimulated. In his autobiography, Klaus Kinski recalls one of these scenes with Tosca D'Aquino: "She was embarrassed and closed her legs. I had to block them violently. When I penetrated her with my fingers, she squirmed and moaned." D'Aquino recalls with shock her experience in the film: "I suffered the harassment of Kinski's very difficult character. Going back I would not make this film because I suffered a lot. He was a very violent man. I had a complicated relationship, he was bossy, I had bruises. There were scenes where you can and must pretend. But I think Klaus was one of the old-fashioned fanatics: at the time I thought cinema should be done like this. "
Eva Grimaldi revealed that she had unsimulated sex with Klaus Kinski on set. In the sequence (not in the original script and added later by Kinski) Grimaldi, playing Napoleone's sister, is penetrated from rear by Kinski, playing Paganini. The camera framed their close-ups so nothing explicit is seen. When asked what would have happened if they had filmed it in total, Grimaldi said, "I'm an actress ... I would have continued the scene".
