The US-DVD is censored compared to the German one in several scenes. Oftenly, "hard" scenes were alleviated by using alternatove (more harmless footage). In single cases, some things were simply cut out.
Based on the evidence in the film, they were catered into hell where they were turned into mindless zombies.
