One of two musical comedy-drama TV series broadcast in 1990, in a failed attempt to create a new TV genre. The other was Hull High (1990).
In a May 9, 2022, interview on the National Public Radio program "Here & Now," recording artist Sheryl Crow said that one of her first professional singing jobs ever was a role on Cop Rock. She joked, "when I auditioned and got to be on Cop Rock, it had been canceled. It was going to be the last episode. So that was the start of my acting career!" Crow, who played a singing policewoman on the show, has in fact only acted in a very small handful of projects since (not counting appearances as herself on TV shows such as The Naked Truth, 30 Rock, and NCIS: New Orleans).
In a May 2009 poll conducted by The Factor (1996), Bill O'Reilly revealed that this short-lived series was voted the 5th worst TV show in broadcast history. Ahead of it were The Gong Show (1976), Friends (1994), The Jerry Springer Show (1991) and My Mother the Car (1965).
