By the time he made Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, John Hughes was playing with house money. He already had a string of hit movie comedies under his belt, including Mr. Mom, National Lampoon’s Vacation and The Breakfast Club. Even though he was only three years into his film career, Hughes had enough juice to pay homage to his own hits with hidden Easter eggs in Ferris Bueller.
Hughes tipping his hat to Hughes came in the form of license plates. Many of the characters drove cars that gave subtle shout-outs to the comedies that came before.
For example, Ferris’s mom must have been a big Chevy Chase fan. Her Vctn license plate nods to his Hughes comedy, National Lampoon’s Vacation.
Ferris’ dad drives a sporty number with Mmom plates, a tribute to Hughes’ first produced comedy, Mr. Mom.

It’s been nearly 40 years since Mia Sara first made an impression on moviegoers in the seminal 1986 classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” an experience that Sara recalls fondly — particularly filming that iconic parade sequence. In the scene, Matthew Broderick (aka “Bueller…”) leads an impromptu, elaborate, rag tag dance troop through the streets of Chicago, set to The Beatles’ “Twist and Shout.”
“We would do the dance and then we’d get in a van and they’d drive us blocks away,” Sara told People. And the camera would go, and then we’d do the dance again and wait for Matthew to pass. It was just this crazy ‘let’s catch it as many times as we can.’ So that was a great moment.”

Chris Columbus Awkward Meeting(Photo Credit –Instagram)
When it comes to Christmas flicks, Home Alone is a chef-d’oeuvre. Watching Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) outmaneuver the bumbling Wet Bandits is a holiday tradition. But what if this beloved film nearly never happened?
Believe it or not, Home Alone exists because of an awkward, borderline bizarre meeting. One that had nothing to do with Kevin, burglars, or booby traps—but everything to do with Chevy Chase.
Back in the late 1980s, director Chris Columbus was in a rut. He needed a hit, and fast. Enter John Hughes, the legendary filmmaker behind Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club. Hughes handed Columbus a golden opportunity: directing National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Columbus was eager to take it on. That zeal, however, didn’t last long. The trouble started when he met the film’s star, Chase. The conversation was anything but smooth.

Matthew Broderick has enjoyed a long and notable career in Hollywood. The actor's career began in the 1980s with Max Dugan Returns, and he quickly evolved into a worldwide sensation. He starred in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which earned $70 million on a $5 million budget and would eventually be preserved in the Library of Congress. He then went on to appear in The Lion King (1994), Godzilla (1998), and Inspector Gadget (1999). Throughout those years, he also appeared on stage, if only out of his love for theater. There, he won two Tony Awards within 15 years.

Jack Nicholson had an undeniably impressive film career. From the outside looking in at least, he seemed to be riding high from his breakout role in 1969's "Easy Rider" all the way to 2007's "The Bucket List," before gracefully retiring from Hollywood in recent years. But although Nicholson would still be landing great roles deep into the 2000s, he was already starting to feel too old in 1986. In an '86 interview with the New York Times, Nicholson talked about how he watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Although this is arguably director John Hughes' best movie, Nicholson hated every moment of it.
"That movie made me feel totally irrelevant to anything that any audience could want, and 119 years old" Nicholson explained. ''Believe me, everyone else watching it liked it. And you know, I literally walked out of there thinking my days are numbered. These people are trying to kill me."

A wise rebellious youth once noted: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." This quote by Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off invokes the free spirit of the titular character, one who defies authority not out of spite, but to appreciate the finer moments in life sidelined by the everyday distractions. It was easy for Ferris Bueller to be the voice of the disaffected youth tired of monotonous homework and quarrels with parents, and no director tapped into the hearts of the prevalent teen culture of the 1980s with more success than the late John Hughes. While Ferris Bueller is a universally accessible film about coming-of-age and personal autonomy, the sentiment of a teenage revolution might make an old-school Hollywood star like Jack Nicholson, baffled by the film upon seeing it in 1986, feel like 100 years old.

Exclusive: Disney+ is in early development on Phantom, a YA movie reimagination of classic novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, sources tell Deadline. The project hails from Disney Branded Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical, Descendants. This marks Ortega’s return to Disney following the conclusion of his deal with Netflix. He will direct and executive produce Phantom under his The Ko Company production banner. The spec script was written by Giovanni M. Porta (At Midnight) from a story by Porta and Eric Bromberg.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is one of the best teen movies of all time, but it also (perhaps purposely) tells its story from a very privileged point-of-view. I adore the John Hughes classic, yet the last few times I've watched it, I've been struck by how terribly Ferris (Matthew Broderick) treats the customer service workers he meets throughout the film. It's all a part of his schtick; to craft the perfect day off, he has to get access to all sorts of fun stuff, and the quickest way to do that is by putting on a haughty, rich-white guy persona that he probably learned from his dad.
It may be blasphemous to even consider adding a new layer to a perfect Hughes-made story, but if someone's going to do it, it may as well be a filmmaker who's interested in approaching the material from a truly fresh angle. Enter: "Sam and Victor's Day Off,...

Life moves pretty fast. It moves a lot slower when you’re watching the painfully terrible intro of the equally terrible Ferris Bueller sitcom.
On paper, you can see why Paramount was eager to turn their 1986 hit teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off into an at least watchable sitcom centered around the title character. After all, Matthew Broderick’s performance as the devilishly charming delinquent who spends a sick day enjoying all the most iconic sights and sounds of Chicago perfectly captured a cultural moment during director John Hughes’ legendary run of classic teen movies set and shot in and around the Windy City.
However, the turd that Paramount Television squeezed out in 1990 was neither watchable nor iconic — in fact, the ABC show Ferris Bueller was so bad and so unpopular that the network ended up canceling the abomination in the middle of its first season.

Paramount is moving ahead with its Ferris Bueller spinoff film, Sam and Victor's Day Off.
First reported by the newsletter The InSneider and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has set David Katzenberg to direct Sam and Victor's Day Off. Like Ferris Bueller, the upcoming spinoff will take place over a single day, following the two titular valets who borrow the Ferrari belonging to Cameron Frye's (Alan Ruck) father in John Hughes' original 1986 film. The best high school comedies have killer soundtracks, coming-of-age lessons, and lots of laughs, becoming time capsules that evoke nostalgia. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, To Die For, Lady Bird, Say Anything..., and Election are among the greatest high school comedies, each with their own unique themes and impact.
School-themed comedies have been a consistently popular movie genre since the days of the silent era with films such as Harold Lloyd's The Freshman and Buster Keaton's College. As the daughter of the misanthropic waitress Carla (Rhea Perlman) and Nick Tortelli (Dan Hedaya) on "Cheers," the role of Serafina Tortelli was a highly coveted role for many of the young actresses in Hollywood in the early 1990s. The character was ultimately played by Leah Remini, who at the time had been making a name for herself on TV shows like "Who's The Boss," "Living Dolls," and "Saved by the Bell." This was obviously years before she'd become one of the leading sitcom wives thanks to "King of Queens" and a host with "The Talk" and "People Puzzler," but the early career role is still beloved by her fans.

"The Other Zoey" is a nostalgic rom-com that brings back the charm of early 2000s romantic comedies while also offering something new. Sara Zandieh, the director, aimed to create a feel-good movie that explores themes of love, fate, and compatibility while also bringing people together. The supporting characters in the film were expanded upon to give the talented cast ample screen time and make the most of their performances.
The Other Zoey is a fun romantic comedy with a novel twist. Zoey Miller (Josephine Langford) finds herself on vacation with Zach MacLaren (Drew Starkey) and his family, after the football star suffers a concussion and confuses her for his girlfriend, also coincidentally named Zoey. On the vacation, Zoey finds herself in close quarters with Zach’s cousin Miles and must choose who she wants to be with while also maintaining the ruse that she is the right Zoey.

The end credits scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off with Principal Rooney on the school bus is placed at the wrong time in the movie chronologically. The bus scene was originally intended to take place earlier in the story, between the odometer scene and the pool scene. Director John Hughes explained in the DVD commentary that he wanted a scene to play over the end credits, and the slow pacing and comedic interactions of the school bus scene made it a perfect fit.

"Only Murders in the Building" season 3 has a few songs in its heart. A musical theatre aficionado will have a ball with season 3 of "Only Murders in the Building," thanks to Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) converting his outlandish murder-mystery play "Death Rattle" into a musical.
While the trio are solving yet another murder, this season is brimming with musical references. In season 3, episode 2, a recuperating Putnam hallucinates his loved ones performing a pastiche of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" from the Bob Fosse-directed "All That Jazz." It's a cutting reference because said musical film, especially this particular number, metatextually tackles the director's heart attack. It deals with mortal self-flagellation, both for Fosse and in-universe for Fosse's fictional avatar.
In contrast, the show also applies a more lighthearted reference to "The Producers" that complements Oliver's pursuits. After a falling out with his friend Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver needs a replacement for the Investigator.

Where to Watch Powered by The timeline of Ferris Bueller's Day Off is unclear due to the incorporation of real events, but possible dates include June 5, 1985, September 21, 1985, and September 24, 1985. June 5, 1985 is a contender because it aligns with the baseball game scene, but discrepancies in the footage make it less likely. September 21, 1985 is also a strong possibility due to the Von Steuben Parade scene and the filming date, which matches the festival's date.

John Hughes‘ 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is one of the all-time teen movies and may be the most popular film of his career. But Indiewire reports that according to star Matthew Broderick, it wasn’t always rosy on the film’s set. In fact, Broderick’s relationship with Hughes making the film was strained, with the director at one point going so far as to call the actor’s performance “boring.”

So the judges on “The Masked Singer” are still trying to figure out who Fairy is this week, and Ken Jeong has another wild, wild guess.
He’s going from one Brad Pitt ex to another. Last week, he was certain Fairy was Angelina Jolie. Now he’s saying he’s sure it’s Jennifer Aniston.
“I know last week, I guess Angelina Jolie to a chorus of boos,” Jeong said. “Note taken, so I’m going to make it more realistic tonight this is Jennifer Aniston, and I’ll tell you why.”
Everyone laughed, including Nick Cannon and the other judges, but Jeong was adamant he’s got this all figured out.

Cameron is one of the funniest characters in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but a detail that wasn't revealed until years later makes the character's backstory so much more tragic. John Hughes' 1986 teen comedy is a classic, with the film being remembered for its unique style, quotable lines, and hilarious jokes. Although the film presents Cameron as a loser, one Ferris Bueller's Day Off detail hints that Cameron's story is so much sadder than the movie lets on.
Donning his red hockey jersey and khaki shorts, Cameron Frye is a member of Ferris Bueller's Day Off's main trio of characters who decide to skip school for a day. In the film, Cameron is shown to be the anxious and awkward counterpart of the fearless and fun-loving Ferris Bueller, with the dynamic between the two characters being one of the film's most memorable aspects. John Milius' Reagan-era action hit "Red Dawn" wasn't just a running "Hot Tub Time Machine" gag; the Cold War fantasy of guerilla patriot youths marked a new peak of commercial success for the "Wind and the Lion" director and stimulated the careers of several of its young stars.
The story, of teen freedom fighters repelling commies in Soviet-invaded Colorado, was a box-office smash in the summer of 1984, nestled alongside the Los Angeles Olympics — which the Soviets were boycotting after the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Olympics four years prior. Halloween Ends' Laurie Strode wig has found a surprising second life thanks to Lifetime. Laurie Strode is the iconic final girl character who has been played by Jaime Lee Curtis since the very beginning of the franchise in 1978's Halloween. She reprised the role in 1981's Halloween II, 1998's Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, 2002's Halloween: Resurrection, and the trilogy of David Gordon Green films that kicked off with 2018's Halloween. Halloween Ends, which came to theaters on October 14, 2022, closed out the trilogy and is purportedly the end of the storyline following Strode's longtime battle with masked serial killer Michael Myers.

The Ferrari 250 Gt California featured in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the more iconic vehicles of ’80s cinema, and someone just bought it for a whopping 337, 500 at auction. That’s quite the price tag, especially considering that the car doesn’t even have an engine and obviously isn’t driveable. Has anyone checked under the hood for a drawing of an engine?

Netflix’s Cobra Kai returned for its fifth season on September 9 and since then, the popular series has taken control of the No. 1 on the streamer’s top 10 list with no signs of slowing down.
And thanks to that continued success, series creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are in very high demand. The trio is currently working on their upcoming Netflix series Obliterated, a “high octane” action-comedy that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas.
Deadline also recently revealed exclusively that Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg are working on a film for Paramount Pictures titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off, a spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off focusing on the valet drivers who went on a joyride in the John Hughes film.

“Bandit” may be, as it proudly declares up front, based on a true story. But it’s hard to believe the titular antihero was quite as charming as the guy playing him.
Josh Duhamel is Robert Whiteman — or, technically, Gilbert Galvan Jr., as he’s known before he escapes a Michigan jail and flees to Ontario in 1985. He becomes Whiteman when he buys a homeless man’s ID, so he can get a job selling ice cream. But when he’s fired, he needs a new gig fast. Unfortunately, even in Canada it’s tough to find work as a wanted convict.
So Robert starts looking around for ways to make some easy money. Actually, make that fast money. Canadian banks, he learns while robbing them, have very little security, and he’s in and out in minutes. But it’s definitely work, what with the careful planning, the costumes and prosthetics,...

Has '80s nostalgia in Hollywood gotten out of hand? Yes. But then again, it's not like we're gonna complain about a spin-off of the best '80s movie of all time. Rather than attempting any sort of remake or sequel, "Sam and Victor's Day Off" will take us through the day of the two valet drivers who took the Ferrari on a joy ride and caused Cameron (Alan Ruck) so many headaches. We don't have many details just yet, but we know the movie will be made by the same creators behind "Cobra Kai," the successful TV spinoff of "Karate Kid."
Much like how "Cobra Kai" explores the perspectives of characters who didn't get the main focus in the original movie, this spinoff is expected to depict some events of "Ferris Bueller" from the outside point of view the valets provide. As co-creator Jon Hurwitz explained, "Some of the...

Ferris Bueller may be headed back to the big screen. Sort of.
A spinoff of the 1986 John Hughes teen comedy classic “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” is being developed by Paramount Studios, according to a new report from Deadline. However, this new project won’t focus on the character famously played by Matthew Broderick. Instead, the spinoff would centre on the valet parking attendants who took a joy ride in the 1961 Ferrari 250 Gt California that belonged to the father of Bueller’s best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck). The Ferrari played a pivotal role in the movie, as fans will recall.

Deadline reports that Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are developing a spinoff of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off for Paramount Pictures.
The Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spinoff is titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off and will follow the “same-day adventures of the titular valets who took the Ferrari on a joy ride” in the 1986 John Hughes movie. The original roles were played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, but the characters weren’t given names at the time. Bill Posley (Bitch Ass) is slated to pen the script for the spinoff.

The conservator for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” actress Edie McClurg was granted a restraining order against an alleged abuser on Tuesday, according to documents obtained by TheWrap.
The conservatorship was set up in 2019 and is run by “Life in Pieces” actress Angelique Cabral, whose mother is McClurg’s cousin.
The documents state that Cabral is “highly concerned” about a man named Michael Ramos, who has been living with the 78-year-old character actress and previously attempted to marry her. According to the documents, he sexually assaulted one of McClurg’s caregivers, and that woman fears he might also be assaulting McClurg.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.

“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” creator Tim Federle makes his directorial debut with the film “Better Nate Than Ever,” adapted from his award-winning book by the same name.
The story follows 13-year-old Nate (newcomer Rueby Wood), an awkward, aspiring theater kid who can’t land a role in his school play, yet follows his dream from his hometown of Pittsburgh to audition on Broadway. Lisa Kudrow, Joshua Bassett, Aria Brooks and Broadway legends Michelle Federer and Norbert Leo Butz also star.
As the cast and crew gathered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood Tuesday night to celebrate the film’s April 1 launch on Disney Plus, Federle spoke to Variety about the story’s discussion of sexuality, the importance of LGBTQ representation in entertainment and weighed in on the controversy over Disney’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

With both title and central buddy dynamic tipping hat to “Superbad,” among other raunchy teen comedies, “Supercool” is not the kind of movie that wins prizes for originality. Nor is Finnish director Teppo Airaksinen’s first U.S.-shot, English-language project as outrageous as it thinks it is. Nonetheless, this energetic spin through high school antics redolent of everything since “Ferris Bueller” is colorful and amusing enough to entertain viewers looking for a familiar mix of bad-taste gags in a squeaky-clean suburban setting. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to 20 U.S. theater screens as well as on-demand platforms Feb. 11.

Pulling off a successful film to television adaptation is a tricky business. While TV series like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “M*A*S*H*” are stellar examples of TV adaptations that expanded and even elevated their film origins, there have also been forgettable failures like “Dirty Dancing” (1998) and “Ferris Bueller” (1990). In the case of “Cobra Kai,” which returns for its fourth season on Netflix, we’re treated to a series that faithfully honors its roots while managing to tell new and compelling stories through its two main protagonists, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel “Danny” Larusso (Ralph Macchio).

Netflix is set to lose “Friends” and “The Office” in the next couple of years. Yada, yada yada… the streaming giant is bringing in another former NBC sitcom to its service with “Seinfeld.”
Netflix announced on Monday that it landed the global rights to the comedy, which ran from 1989 to 1998, beginning in 2021. “Seinfeld” had been available on Hulu since 2015. Terms of the deal with Sony Pictures Television, which handles distribution of the show, were not disclosed.
“‘Seinfeld’ is the television comedy that all television comedy is measured against,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, said. “It is as fresh and funny as ever and will be available to the world in 4K for the first time. We can’t wait to welcome Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer to their new global home on Netflix.”

Matthew Broderick goes from Hollywood’s favorite high school truant to a positive principal in Netflix’s upcoming dramedy “Daybreak.”
And the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” references don’t end there, as the official trailer released Monday morning showed.
Star Colin Ford, who plays 17-year-old hero, Josh Wheeler, closes out the action-filled teaser with this drop-the-mic line honoring the 1986 John Hughes classic: “And you thought we weren’t going to have any fun with the apocalypse, shame on you.”

The 1-minute, 1o-second clip opens with a normal school day as Broderick’s Principal Michael Burr makes morning announcements and positive affirmations to the students of Glendale High School.
Then things start to get wild, as we realize that this is actually post-apocalyptic California that is more like “Mad Max” than “Saved by the Bell.

The Goldbergs is a fantasically funny show, with the best stories, jam-packed with nostalgia and ‘80s goodness all based on the life of creator Adam F. Goldberg. Now the spinoff, Schooled, is based on the character Laney Lewis, played by Aj Michalka, who was the best friend and girlfriend of two of the Goldberg teens. Lewis has fast-forwarded into the ‘90s where she is a high school teacher at William Penn Academy, with Principal Glascott (Tim Meadows), and some of our other favorite teachers from The Goldbergs in tow.
Each episode of The Goldbergs is based around a movie, show, event, album, or something pop-culture centered in the ‘80s. And it looks like Schooled has followed suit. This week’s episode was based on the Broadway musical Rent. As the show is just starting, it’s fun to think of all the awesome 9’0s themes they can run with in upcoming episodes of the series,...
